Metal Fans: battle of Nice Dreams?

Powermad vs Charred Walls of the Damned

The song is one of my favourite songs from Powermads album Absolute Power, but when i mentioned this song previously, it was pointed out by a contact that Charred Walls of the Damned covered it and did a better job...maybe i am used to the Powermad version so i prefer that, but lets see what everyone else thinks

    Good Morning Owen :D

My choice would be Powermad, I remember the album Absolute Power very well. let me retrospect a moment, yeah I remember my best friend at the time turning me on to that album sometime in 89. then later I believe in 90 him, his gal and I all went to go see the movie Wild at Heart, a David Lynch film. My friend and I got really into Powermad and felt they were pretty obscure so being all young and goofy at the time, we got all stoked when we heard a Powermad song in the film. David Lynch used one of the songs I don't remember which one, could have been Nice Dreams not sure.

So by sentimental default, I have to go with Powermad, however, Charred does a pretty good job.

My favorite song off Absolute Power would be Final Frontier. Thanks for bringing back some very fond memories man! Cheers buddy :D

    Edit:

Oh yeah! haha, I remember that now, wow that was indeed back in the day. =P

    Edit:

Okay yeah Miss_Beh, that's it. I couldn't for the life of me remember which one, thanks! :D

Funny I was just listening to Charred Walls of The Damned and I have to say... The Ripper OWNS!!!

So what do we have here? A rather snazzy, very nice track. Very melodic and catchy intro, I knew I was up for a sweeping Speed metal ride!

I liked the guitar tone better in Powermad but the vocals are honestly kinda generic (very good just not amazing). I'm honetly not a fan of the high pitched vocals and the drumming, while good, is not phenomenal. The track is VERY nice though, kinda Power metallish and that's not bad in my book ;D

Nice audible fat, thumpy bass too. Some unique elements too at around the 3:20 mark. All in all this song is very enjoyable, I would not consider mentioning something half arssed like "comparatively simple" or not "very original" cuz I LOVE it. Simple, neat, nice straight to the point!!!

    Now this is frikkin' RIPPER!!!

Seriously, Tim Owens is one of my favourite vocalists. Of course I enjoyed the dynamic pipes of the mighty Ripper and the trademark Halfordesque screech better. It really accentuates that dreamy, melodic solo quiet nicely. I enjoyed the tone of Charred Walls better on the solos unlike the intro. Ripper's screech is just wow ~ *fangasm*

THAT being said I by no means enjoyed the solos on Charred better. The guitars (even though a clearer production would have been welcome) sound fresh, vivid, crisp and overall more colourful to me on PM. Powermad guitar WINS!

Now the drums. Richard Christy is LEGENDARY. The drumming is immediately recognizable and it's quiet nicely delivered. Not soo imnportant as the song was guitar driven and Powermad did a perfectly fine job on drums. Still a nice touch from Christy.

You know... I never quiet figured if I like Charred Walls as much as I should considering they all kick my butt so hard. Favourite vocalist plus fave rhythm section is a force to be reckoned with ya know?

I didn't hear Digorigio's bass *huff* but that's probably I'm half deaf at the moment (why the hell the darned ear wouldn't work?! *replicates Van Gogh fiasco*) but yeah the cover is very chill as well. Although I don't feel Charred as a whole is as amazing as members are individually BUT they belt out some pretty epic stuff.

Final verdict? I'm all for an emotional connection with a song instead of just breaking it down to sheer technicality... And the original simple sounded... original I guess? Powermad was lively, flashy, energetic and soulful to me - how to explain it? Sort of fruity, "strawberrish" feel to it if you know what me means? * you: weirdo*

So I go with... *drum rolls*... POWERMAD!!!

Hail power metal! Nice pick tron, they have a kinda yummy flavour about them which I really enjoy :DD

Source(s): * Note ~ even though I really like the Powermad version I'd listen to the Charred version more frequently as it's simply more dynamic to me. Still both versions are very nice. Great job! =D

To Brian --Wild at Heart!! Wow, going back to 1990 there, I think I have that movie on VHS still... The Powermad song you were talking about in the movie was Slaughter House.

Charred did a great job on it, but you can never deny the original version. You will always have love for the original.

To Brian- you're welcome, I'm always here for that random useless nugget of knowledge \m/ \m/

Source(s): \M/ \M/ showing some love for the metal!
