Question for Jews / Judaism / Zionism: What are the most holy books in your religion?
As a Christian, I've always thought the "Chosen People" were followers of Moses (the Torah) and the writings of the Prophets. Maybe noticing the fulfillment of Isaiah 53 and Psalm 22 and becoming Messianic Jews. But further research shows that perhaps...these are not the holy books that you follow. What are the holy books in present day Judaism? And as members of the "Chosen Race," where does that leave people like me (members of the Christian community) as the "Chosen" bring us into the new utopia?
Caleb~ Thanks for your post and the understanding that the "chosen, 'do not believe themselves to be better than any other people.'"
But if I may ask: What goes through your mind when you hear the term "goyim?"
DS M~ Thanks for your post. So, if I understand correctly, "atheist Jews" are just as Jewish as anyone else, (Jewish?) But do these Jews practice Judaism? What are their most holy books? You list a passage from the book of Acts as an authority. I could give you the New Testament authority (Rom. 11) of what is, or is not a Jew according to the NT; but as an atheist, could you receive it?
Dr. Ariella Oppenheim, a Jewish professor of genetics at the Hebrew University in Israel, reports in the American Journal of Human Genetics (November 2001) that Jews are closely related in DNA to Iraqis, Kurds, Turks, and Armenians. Proving that ethic purity of the Jewish race, may be a fantasy. And there is no such thing as a pure Jew distinguishable from other races.
Thanks for your post Invisible Mar: Are you Messianic Jewish?
DS M ~ Thanks for the reply. Judaism 101 leaves a grab-bag as to what is a Jew. Take your choice: orthodox, reform, conservative. Whatever "floats your boat." If the Torah is the authority, no unbeliever (atheist) could ever be considered Jewish when rejecting the existence of G-d; being "cut off from among the people; and coming under the curses listed in Deuteronomy 28:15-68. The Jew under the Torah understands that it's a spiritual transaction i.e., covenant; (whether born into it or not [e.g, Rahab, and Ruth]) that is validated by the token of circumcision, (for the men.) If the Reform side of Judaism validates atheistism, you do so at the risk that "the divine authority" doesn't show up someday and require an accounting. Christians are warned not to take that road in 2Tim.4:3,4.
Paul's mission was not to start "a new religion." His testimony before King Agrippa (Acts 26) was to confirm the "promise made of G-d unto our fathers,
(Acts 26:6.) Which included the Gentile nations for Abraham was told that all the nations (families) would be blessed (Gen.12:3)
The crux of my question is this: There are two versions of the Talmud; (Jerusalem Talmud) oral law, and one called the Babylonian Talmud. Does modern day Judaism embraces the Babylonian Talmud above the Torah? "And modern Jewish practice follows the Babylonian Talmud's conclusions on all areas in which the two Talmud's conflict." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talmud
And what of the holy Kabbalah? Which sect of Judaism is into both the Kabbalah and Babylonian Talmud as their most holy books? Or does such a group exist? One researcher lumps all of Judaism together into this one group. It that true...what say you?

In Jerusalem, on the day of Pentecost, 120 JEWS were filled with the spirit of God like the prophets fulfilling Joel 2. As the word Christian was not invented at this time and there were ZERO Gentiles, this was a Jewish event. If you fast forward to Act 15, you will find there are ZERO Gentile leaders.
In fact, ALL Believers trace their spiritual heritage to these 120 and this event. As Jesus and all His disciples were Jewish, the Jewish scripture was fulfilled and the spirit of God that fills you filled the Jewish prophet, please tell me where scriptural Judaism was replaced by something else.
***What are the most holy books in your religion?*** You don't understand the definition of a Jew.
Read it for yourself, Judaism 101 says:
***Who is a Jew?
A Jew is any person whose mother was a Jew or any person who has gone through the formal process of conversion to Judaism.*** (What does that mean?)
Clarification given:
***It is important to note that being a Jew has nothing to do with what you believe or what you do.***
And further clarification given:
***a person born to a Jewish mother who is an atheist and never practices the Jewish religion is still a Jew, even in the eyes of the ultra-Orthodox.*** http://www.jewfaq.org/whoisjew.htm
So, what book is holy to an atheist Jew?
Dr. Kaufman Kohler said at the Pittsburgh conference of Reform leaders,
***“We consider their [the Holy scripture’s] composition, their arrangements and their entire contents as the work of men, betraying in their conceptions of the world shortcomings of their age;
...“We must discard the idea as altogether foreign to us, that marriage with a Gentile is not legal."
...I do not for a moment hesitate to say it right here and in the face of the entire Jewish world that… circumcision is a barbarous cruelty which disfigures and disgraces our ancestral heirloom and our holy mission as priests among mankind. The rite is a national remnant of savage African life… Nor should children born of intermarriage be viewed any longer exclusively by the primitive national standard which determines the racial character of the child only by the blood of the mother… I can no longer accept the fanciful and twisted syllogisms of Talmudic law as binding for us… I think, if anywhere, here we ought to have the courage to emancipate ourselves from the thralldom of Rabbinical legality.
With few modifications, the conference unanimously adopted Dr. Kohler’s proposed Pittsburg Platform.
...The Platform swept away Jewish dietary laws because “they fail to impress the modern Jew.”
...A survey commissioned that year by the Central Conference of American [Reform] Rabbis, reported that “...ninety-percent classified their faith with terms like: “Agnostic;” “Atheist;” ***

So you understand, atheism is the religion of many Jews and Jews practice many different faiths of which Judaism is just one.
Hope this helps
Edit
***So, if I understand correctly, "atheist Jews" are just as Jewish as anyone else, (Jewish?)***
I am quoting Judaism 101...so it isn't me. Read the first paragraph and see for yourself.
Also, notice that 90% of the Reform rabbis classify their faith as something other than Judaism. Again, I didn't conduct the survey. These were the result of the survey the Reform did. I just provided the link and the info.
But do these Jews practice Judaism?
What else do Jews practice...it just isn't scriptural Judaism. Even the Orthodox don't practice that. They believe the "age of the prophet" ended So while all the Jewish scriptures teach that HaShem speaks and acts, that is not what the Orthodox teach.
***You list a passage from the book of Acts as an authority. I could give you the New Testament authority (Rom. 11) of what is, or is not a Jew according to the NT; but as an atheist, could you receive it?***
Acts is part of scriptural Judaism...it is also Messianic Judaism...you would have to prove that a new religion was started and instead Judaism continued. Good luck with that because Ro 11 was written by a Jew who went back to Jerusalem
***26 The next day Paul took the men and purified himself along with them. Then he went to the temple to give notice of the date when the days of purification would end and the offering would be made for each of them. *** Paul had no problem being Jewish. He simply heard the spirit of God and responded in faith as all that hear words from the LORD. The Orthodox and Reform do not...but they are still Jews
EDIT
Ahab, for example, killed the prophets as a part of what Israel did. It was so serious that Elijah thought he was the only believer in ALL ISRAEL. Yet, there was no concern about the survival of oral Torah or how it made it through because it did not exist.

The Torah (Genesis - Deuteronomy) is the most Holy book of Judaism. Followed by the Neviim (Prophets) and the Ketuvim (Writings). Together they form the Tanakh or Old Testament. Not to say that the Neviim and the Ketuvim are less holy, but if you forced me to say one book that was the most holy it would be the Torah, because that is where the Jewish law comes from as well as our tradition. According to tradition it was also revealed to us on Mt. Sinai during the Exodus.
The Talmud is also holy, as it contains what is called the "Oral Torah" which was the rest of the laws of the Torah that were not written down, but passed down by oral tradition. Eventually they were written down so that they would not be forgotten.
The Jewish concept of "Chosen people" is often misconstrued. It does not mean that we are better than any other people, what it means is that we have been assigned to keep G-d and his ways. So it just means that we have a larger religious responsibility than other people, not that we are superior in any way.
