You don't. If you did you wouldn't ask the question. Most of a person's life depends upon the decisions they make and if they always knew which was the right one, life would be devoid of challenge and interest. Where is the challenge, the joy, the spontaneity of living, if you always know the outcome of every decision you make? I am approaching the end of my life, and when I look back at the decisions I have made I have many regrets. I often think, "What if....?" What sustains me, what gives me solace, is the thought that what might have been is not necessarily what would have been. We do the best that we can but we often find that chance directs the course or the outcome of our decision. When we are wrong the result is not always bad. If we are intelligent and introspective, we learn from our mistakes and the gift is wisdom. Someone once said, "Be careful what you pray for; you just might get it." My hope for you, Sonodora, is that your prayers are answered, but my greater hope is that you know what to pray for!
