Number of concussions in the NHL?

I have seen a lot of discussion on ESPN and in other places about the number of concussions in the NHL. Some analysts suggest that the game of hockey is faster and more violent today than it has been in the past. Others point out that we have better tests for concussions and more strict protocol about how a player with a concussion comes back to the game, so it only seems like there are more concussions. What do you think?

I think that there are more concussions than in the past, but not as many as the statistics show. They are better at detecting them, but the new rules instituted after the lockout are making players more vulnerable to being concussed. With the addition of the trapezoid, more players are being slammed head into the boards while going after a puck behind the goal line. Before, it wouldn't have been an issue, the goalie would have cleared it away. Getting rid of the red line for two line passes means that more players are going through the neutral zone at full speed, sometimes with their heads down, and any hit, legal or otherwise could lead to concussions under those circumstances. Also in the past when obstruction in the neutral zone was allowed, many players couldn't get up to full speed anyway. The new pads aren't helping matters any.

Another fact is that the equipment today is unlike any other in the past. They will discuss about how the equipment today are like weapons. for example, harder elbow pads/shoulder pads. The game is faster and players are putting themselves in more vulnerable positions these days. Some of these concussions are accidental though. Claude Giroux got hit in the back of his head but by his own teammate. As much as I want to see the Flyers fail, Giroux is a hell of a player. Let alone Crosby
