Just a pagan holiday adopted by the church.
The pagans were already giving gifts, decorating trees, having huge feasts and so on, long before Jesus was born, in honor of the sun god.
So the Catholic church said "Come on over. You pagans can become 'Christian' and still do all those pagan things. But you can call it worshiping the son of god, not the sun god."
And the rest is history.

It's when some fat dude I'm a red suit dogs from the north pole on a magical flying sleigh pulled be reindeer slides down your chimney and leaves gifts beneath a tree that you chopped down and set up in your living room and decorated with lights and various ornaments. You may also find the need to get white boy wasted on Christmas and this is completely acceptable because you are expected to interact with all your weirdo relatives

It's the day that Jesus Christ was born to the virgin Mary. It's a big celebration world-wide for His birthday, which is a gift for all of us. The story tells of how Mary and Joeseph were traveling in Bethleham, and couldnt find a place to stay for the night. They ended up having to stay in a stable with a manger, and then Jesus was born.
Best wishes in this holiday season!
