Which Tamron/Nikon lenses will fit my Nikon D3100?

I am looking to possibly get another lens for my Nikon D3100, so far I have the kit lens (18-55mm) and the 55-200mm lens. I know that my D3100 doesn't have the lens auto-focus motor in the camera body, so the lens will lose the auto-focus if it is not an AF-S.

I am looking at purchasing a Tamron 18-200mm lens.

Or maybe this type, from Nikon

The tamron would be my first choice, although slight more money, I like the zoom versatility.

I am just wondering how to figure out how to tell which non-nikon lenses have the motor in them, so I will not lose auto-focus.

Just a side note, which is the cheapest nikon dslr with a motor in the body?

Another side note, I am a beginning hobbyist photographer, basically what camera gear is essential for general photography? I am leaning towards close up and macro photography right now, however, I want to experiment with it all until I find a favorite. (landscape, portrait, nature, macro...) Right now I have the 2 aforementioned lenses, a tripod, and a camera bag. I don't want to shell out tons of money yet.

Finally, are there any really good photography books that you could recommend? I like looking through them to get ideas.

    Lenses For Nikon D3100

With tamron, click trough to the tamron usa website. Click the specs tab and make sure it says: "Nikon with Built-In Motor"

With Sigma make sure it says HSM. With nikon make sure it says AF-S.

The nikon you linked is for the new 1 series, it will not fit.

Personally I'm not too fond of the tamrons. If you want oodles of zoom for a friendly price and still decent quality.. sigma makes an 18-200 OS hsm. If you're not scared of buying used and you want a real bargain, look for a nikon 18-135. Good lens, load of reach and ridiculously cheap because it has no VR.

The cheapest motorized nikon body at this time is the D90, especially if you can find a refurbished one.

Gear wise: Get some cleaning stuff, a rocket blower and a microfiber cloth. perhaps an optech rainsleeve if you spent a lot of time outdoors. For the outdoor photographer a comfortable day pack with room for food and water is also a good investment.

Books.. Michael Freeman is one of the few that makes inspirational books in which he talks a lot about composition. Bryan Peterson's understanding exposure is another famous book

Nearly all Nikon lenses do physically fit onto the D3100, but the only ones which will give you auto-focus are the AF-S lenses. You do also have the choice of using Sigma branded lenses, but you need Nikon fit lenses with the HSM HyperSonic Motor built in. If it isn't HSM then again it won't auto-focus. For movies, start with your standard 18-55mm lens. If you frequently find that you can't zoom close enough then consider getting one of the 55-200mm or 55-300mm AF-S VR lenses. If you find that you need to fit more in then consider getting a super-wide angle like the Sigma 10-20mm HSM. Don't buy yet though. If the standard lens is not limiting you then you will only be wasting money by buying something you don't need or buying the wrong thing.
