It sounds like your root filesystem is damaged. You might try pressing the shift key when the machine is booting. This should bring up a few boot options that might help you, possibly including an option to load an older version.

Diagnosing and repairing the problem from that point would require more investigation. You would do well to post your problem on a more technically-oriented site.

there are multiple stable ameliorations (talked approximately as distro's) of Linux... a remarkable-loved one is Ubuntu - it has Firefox and Open place of labor all waiting to pass. Others comprise PCLinuxOS and Mempis. i do no longer understand the 2d area of your question. Ubuntu does have burning application waiting to prepare too. 2) - acquire and burn an iso of Ubuntu. that is an exceptionally great checklist, it may take an prolonged time on a steady connection. you have your pc run it (boot from the cd) to 'attempt stress it' - till now you install. in case you like it (that is going to be lots faster put in on the HD than working from the CD) - particularly click the 'installation' icon on the Ubuntu pc. Have it use each and all the stress (this would get rid of the homestead abode windows installation).
