Is this good home defense policy?

I don't trust my neighbor. I hear that my neighbor is talking about buying a gun. I go next door with my gun, knock, then shoot him when he opens the door so that he can't have the opportunity to buy a gun which he may use on me in the future. I then spend money that I have to borrow to take care of his widow and kids. Is this good home defense policy, or should I have waited for him to make an actual threat before killing him?

Update:

@Maxwell: Actually that's still considered first degree murder.

Update 2:

@Common Sense: Never said I expect the cops to protect me. I asked if going next door and shooting my neighbor for a perceived threat is good home defense policy.

I see from your analogy that you are going to vote for Ron Paul. I wish everyone was as insightful and sensible as you.

To make your parallel to realty accurate, you need to throw in the part about how your neighbor, for years, has been talking about how as soon as he gets a gun he is going to come into your house and slaughter your entire family, and anyone that happens to be there at the time.

Then also the part where you found a receipt for a gun on his kitchen table.

THEN, you actually could make you comparison.

When they draw the outline around your body then they can say that you were right.

It is the fallacy of believing that cops are going to protect you. They may or may not punish the guy that did it but you are still laying in an outline.

If you had not had an efficient intelligence gathering capability in the first place, you would have never known he was planning on getting a gun.

    Ron Paul is a lunatic.

Well, if you want to change your lifestyle, it's a good policy. Nothing like a murder one charge to change your priorities.
