As an International student can I get my housing independently of my College?

I just wanted to know if it's an obligation to get housing from the Post secondary institution that I will be attending I´m not Canadian first time living there on a long term basis, but can I get the roof that's going to cover my head on my own? (It´s just waaaaaaay cheaper)

Canadian universities usually don't care where you live. I wouldn't be too sure it is cheaper in some places.

I don't know about Canada but here in the US it depends on the school. Some will require that you live on campus during your first semester or first year or they will not give you the I-20 that you need to get a student visa. In some cases this kinda makes sense, especially if you don't have family or close friends who can take you around or if you don't have a car. Commuting can be tricky depending on where in the US you are going to school. In a place like New York City it wouldnt matter much since you can take trains to get everywhere. But in places like LA or Miami, it gets trickier.
