Super sad, yet afraid to tell any of my friends b/c I don't want to bring them down on Christmas.?
I have depression that has it's ups and downs. This Christmas I am completely alone. No family, no friends. I've been really sad for a couple of months, and now it just seems worse. I am taking my medication, but I still have crying jags and just feel so lost and empty and have no motivation to do anything. I guess my question is, Do I write to a friend or two anyway even though it's Dec. 24th, or should I wait a couple of days? I'm not suicidal, btw. I feel so sad I don't want to live, but I know I will not try to kill myself.
I'd appreciate answers from people who've also had serious depression/loss issues. Saying things like, "Just get happy!" "Just have fun!" is like telling a diabetic to just "get over" the disease. If depression could just be "gotten over", no one would have it b/c it sucks. I've lost my son, husband, mother, and one of my closest friends all in the past 2 years. I have many great friends, but the question is still, should I e-mail them right now, and risk being a burden to them, or not?
To the person with the friends/no friends response - I live overseas, and my friends have all left for the holidays. I couldn't afford to go to my home country this season.

Yeah, calling your friends just to chat is a really good idea. Not so much writing - no real contact there. You don't need to be sad about it. But definitely don't sit there alone! It gives you way too much time and only one thing to focus on. Go and be with people - at the mall, whatever. Being active always helps chase the blues away too - something about endorphins, I don't understand the science of it much but it works. Go for a brisk walk or a run, go swimming, anything like that.
... if you'd like some random person to talk to you can email me. I've got a long day by myself ahead of me too.

I think christmas does this to quite a few people. The fact that is is around winter so you cannot go out and do as much, everyone is with their family and having fun and you cannot join them as you are not part of their family. So you get shoved on your own for a month or two while everyone else seems to be having fun. I'm not sure if this is your problem but I am taking a logical guess.
Try and do something over christmas that will make you forget that you are alone? And just because you have been sad for a few months does not make it that bad to feel that you do not want to live. I have had serious depression for around 4 years now and I have felt like I do not want to live quite a few time but trust me, this depression will end and it will seem better. You just have to make it end.

Go out to a mall and make some friends.
Edit: And instead call your friends and ask what they are doing tomorrow and sound upbeat and casual and say my day is free around the afternoon. You don't have to tell them the negatives yet. Have a great day :).

You said you have no friends then you have many great friends. Which one is it?
Christmas time is always crap when you have no one to share it with. If you have no one, it'll pass.
