How to host website on MY server?

I am currently making a website for someone, and want to host it on my new server except I dont know where to start.

First of all, the website is very simple. It is just a go to it and browse info and pictures. There is no shopping cart, or anything like that.

Second, my server is just a junk computer i bought, and runs pretty decent. I have about every OS for windows... Server 2008, W7, Vista, XP... But for people who know more about hosting websites, should i just install windows 7 on it and call that good? or should I put linux on it?( i have never used linux but it would be a cool experience).

For you people know know about it, can you gide me as to what i should use? Also is it possible to create a domain for free? and also do i need to do anything with DNS?

Give me the steps to posting my site online using my server.

You will get NO help from anywhere with your own server. You will need to register a domain name, this will probably need to be a paid domain name from someone like Eurodns. you will need to subscribe to a static IP address through your ISP, this costs extra and will probably also require a business broadband contract, also much more expensive. It will HAVE to be an unlimited contract or users may be cut off from the site if it goes over the limit. you will need a fast upload as that will be the download speed for clients. Preferably a 10 Mbps upload bandwidth. This normally requires fibre optic service. You must then set the registrar's DNS CNAME, A and PTR records to point to your static IP. The machine will need to be fairly powerful if you want to run any version of Windows on it, as these are resource hungry when running any form of Web server, especially IIS. Better to use Linux and the Apache server. You must open the appropriate prots in the firewall, and also forward those ports through your router to the internal IP address of your server, and this will need to be set as static within the subnet mask of the router, but outside of its' dhcp address pool, or you can get IP conflicts. Not only must you provide a secure and safe web server (any holes in security and it will become a bank fishing site, or child porn distribution centre within a few days. Responsibility will be yours) but you will also need to provide some kind of email service for that domain name. This is another security risk, you will need to configure the mail services VERY carefully or become a spam relay, your IP will be blacklisted for ALL mail. And they do not let you change it once it is. Then you will need those ports open in the firewall and forwarded through the router. This will require imap, pop3 and smtp ports.
