How is this morally okay?

I don't get how mormons can tell themselves that it is good to baptize dead people. If they wanted to be mormon, wouldn't they have been baptized while alive?

There is no standard for morality. One group's notion of morality toward the good could be another groups taboo. It's a man-made conception of right and wrong.

Baptism on behalf of a dead person doesn't make a person Mormon. All the church does is make a note that a person has been baptized in their records and that's that. They are not counted as a member.

The choice is up to the person in Heaven. Personally I have had times when doing Temple work that I had this distinct feeling that the person did not want it. So free will does indeed apply.

Not all of them have the opportunity to be baptized while alive. Those who don't want the opportunity after they are dead aren't required to accept it. The names of those who are dead are submitted to the temple, usually by family.

The baptisms are dead by proxy (a living person is baptized in the place of someone who is dead we don't dig up dead bodies that would be creepy).

In my book I don't understand how it is morally okay to condemn those who are born live and die without ever hearing the name of Christ. At the same time it would make Christ a liar if these people who have never heard of Jesus can be saved without ever being baptized.

We do not baptize dead people, we get baptized for the dead. This is for the people who did not have the opportunity to learn while they were on Earth. They do have the option to accept it while they are in Heaven.

In the LDS church, we believe you cannot be baptized until you are of 8 years old, because you need to be able to choose for yourself.

How is it morally okay to miss out on reaching more potential simply because you never knew?

How is it okay to be punished for not doing something that you would have done had you known better?

Anyway, it's not like the person on the other side has to accept the baptism done in their name.

You must not understand the doctrine surrounding baptisms for the dead, because those who have heard and been taught and have rejected baptism, will most likely not have the opportunity after death.

Mormonism never believes in taking the right to choose away from a soul. So you can relax.

Jesus Christ was baptized, even though He didn't need to. It is very important for people to have an opportunity to accept baptism.

Life is about choices. If a person has not had a baptism done for them if they are dead, then they can not choose to accept baptism, or not, depending on what they want to choose.

According to other Christians only those who accept a certain concept of Christ will go to Heaven. What about those who didn't get a chance to even learn about Christ? Are you okay with a concept that only a few select people ever born will go to Heaven and the rest of humanity will burn in Hell? Is that morally okay with you?

I think it's very morally okay to do proxy baptisms on behalf of my ancestors who didn't get a chance to hear about the gospel during their earthly life. I have the understanding that they are conscious and aware of the work done for them and that they have the choice to accept or reject it. I think this is morally okay because the choice is theirs.

The only people who have a problem with this are people who choose to ignore the fact that we aren't forcing our ancestors to be Mormons, but giving them a choice that they otherwise wouldn't have been given.

  • Do they baptize dead people; or they are baptized FOR dead people (1 Cor. 15:29)?

In 1 Corinthians 15, Paul actually speaks against the baptism of the dead. So, if the Mormons are baptizing their dead, then they are contradicting their own belief system.

A lot of things are not morally okay. Stopping people pouring water on dead people isn't really a high priority.
