One of my neighbors just came over and asked if i wanted to have there pregnant dog?

They have a small dog, probably weights 12 to 16 pounds. They came over and said she got pregnant so they are takeing her to the pound in the morning... She said she felt bad to do this and was going around asking our neighbors if they wanted her first. The dog was so sweet and i felt so bad for her that i took her... I'm having some real concerns though because i really have no experience with pregnant dogs or whelping pups.. I want to try though for this little dog.. She is a weenie dog mix. I will take her to the vet Friday when i get my check and i am going to make that appointment in the morning. In the mean time any advice?? The neighbors said she knows when she got pregnant. She said she found them tied in the back yard. (It was around the 18th of November) I asked what size was the dog and she said about the same as her.. Anyway she is just starting to show but i can tell she is pregnant also. Can i bath her? Also is it safe to have her nails trimmed? And she gave me what was left of her dog food. It is Alpo brand. Can i mix in anything like a cooked egg or some canned tuna? I know i will get more info as i search the net and talk with the vet, but.........im just freaking out a little bit about what i have got my self into.... I just want to help the dog through this and im on a limited budget...

Update:

Thanks for the encouragement and tips so far. I will find away to pay for all the vet bills that may come to pass. I am not going to abort the litter, i feel like she is to far along for that anyway. I do agree that i'm going to have to get her on a better dog food.

By the way I think your great for taking this pup but you don't really need to do anything purchase a dog cage or shelling box something for her to give birth in and make sure your there when it all havens they usually whelp in the night the vet will give you all the advice you need but for more go on you tube and type in dogs 101 puppies and that tells you loads plus any food that will give your dog nutrience meat or something will be a great bonus again I think ur amazing for being so thoughtful

I was doing okay until you said that you are on a limited budget. With a pregnant dog, especially one that the first five weeks of pregnancy wasn't getting proper care. Alpo is not a dog food for a pregnant female. You can give her some scrambled egg mixed in with a quality food. I would gradually change her to something of better quality than Alpo. You don't have to buy the top flight foods, I have whelped lots of Dachshund litters with the mothers on Purina ONE. Since you have a limited budget, it might be best to have her spayed and abort the litter. Ideally, you won't have any major vet bills from her but you will at least want to have her xrayed the week before she is due so you know how many pups to expect and how big they are. If the xray shows that they are too big for her to have, you will have to spring for a c-section. And if she doesn't make milk you will have to get milk replacer and feed the pups every two hours for a week or two until they can eat on their own. If this seems like a financial impossibility for you, I would suggest you have her spayed.

Your neighbor was clueless about dog sex, you don't have to be. Have her spayed, that takes care of the problem. Suggest to your neighbor that spaying his dog prior to the birth will leave him with 'his' pet and not let the problem repeat itself.
