Only the ground reality can only decide who is wrong.

There are basically three types of bribery:

 Taking bribe for doing routine duty

 Taking bribe for doing extraordinary duty for using discretionary power vested, or doing a favour in short time by giving special priority.

 Taking bribe for doing something which impossible otherwise legally.

A public servant on duty is bound to do his duty for which he is being paid by Government. But the rules are such it can be bent in any manner using one’s brain power by writing detailed explanation. Sometimes it so happens that certain things cannot be done legally, but to get a favour the person in power is influenced with various mode including threatening.

In case where for doing routine duty bribe is taken, it is totally wrong solely on the part of taker.

In case where bribe is taken to use the discretionary power, both are not at fault, but only the rules and system is to be blamed. (this can be termed as Tip instead of bribe)

In case where something is impossible on law, but it is done at the risk of person in power or authority, it is a Joint responsibility on both and both giver and taker are wrong.

    Take A Bribe

They're both wrong, but I think that accepting a bribe is worse because it means that the person who took the bribe is going to abuse his authority.

I was once offered a bribe as a teaching assistant, to pass a student I had given a failing grade (he never even showed up, much less do any of the assignments!). I didn't take it. I expect they then went over my head; I never asked. Not worth it to me. But bribes are commonplace in business, and more so in particular cultures where they are expected.

The one who demands and takes bribe is more wrong. I have not complained...but got 2 officials arrested for taking bribe...this was almost 7 yrs back.

Luckily I have neither bribes nor complained about some one.

Both are equally wrong Because it is a give & take process. Both the verbs are transitive hence action cannot be completed by the doer alone.

The one who takes bribe is doing a big sin. If he don't take the bribe, then nobody can give him. But the giver is also responsible.

Aha i thought to ask this , ok in my opinion we have to punish only the giver . there is no problem in receiver , if giver stops and who asks that . so its all fault of giver . giver should not encourage by giving more and more bribe , he should have concern for Society wellness . he should stand ahead and have to fight till the end .. but in practical we know that its not possible , we give bribe in order to fulfill our wish as soon as possible . so receiver taking that has advantage and demanding more and more every time ..

Practically speaking yes , because no other way than that . . also not complained anyone . let god punish them ....

  • Before I answer your question, let me tell you a true story.

One of my family member worked in one of the largest Steel plant in India. He was part of logistic department. He found that lorries come in with stones, weigh along with stones, drop the stones in the plan, fill the lorry steel and go out, recording total weight of the lorry and cheating the company with 300-400 KG steel. So this guy tried raising it to his supervisor, and found that this was part of process and logistic department was paid for that under the table. So this guy reached out to company's higher management, and they did not do anything, so he reached out to GM, and GM asked him to resign immediately else get fired. He did not resign and got fired, which resulted in a big strike in the company and even that time's big union leader George Fernandez visited him, however out of family pressure he backed out and joined another company.

Summary of the story, the situation on ground do not allow to fight against corrupt system.

I was once involved in an accident and that was accident with injury. Police asked me to either pay 2000 or go to court. I opted to go to court, court fined me for Rs 2000 and I had to pay 1500 to lawyer, spend one full day taking off from office. However I would not say that I have never paid bribe, I have paid bribe to mortuary to get postmortem done and body released for my dear one. I have paid bribe to airport authority to get the body passed from one plane to another. I have paid bribe and several occasion. Not because I did right, what I did was absolutely wrong. And I find myself as culprit as those who demanded or took bribe from me.

I don't think it is right to ask "more wrong" not because that is wrong English and right English is worst among two, but because those who give bribe like me encourage a corrupt system along with those who take bribe. Thus none of them can be better than another.
