Travel while I-90 is in process ?

Q'n for a friend. 10 year Green card expired Oct this year. Renewed online Dec. Have receipt number. Need to leave for home country asap, family illness. Planned stay about 3 months. What is needed for reentry back home to Us ?

Update:

"Uncle", thanx. Calling Immigration customer service twice, received 2 different answers. 1. Reentry allowed with receipt number + expired Green card. and 2. Appointment at Immigration with receipt number, Passport and ID. Confusing !!!

Once your friend has the receipt for the I-90, he can make an Infopass appointment and receive an I-551 stamp (code for Green Card) in his passport. Don't waste time calling the misinformation line. Those guys have no clue; they just read answers off of a sheet of paper.
