30-06 Savage Axis or 7mm Remington 700?

I am just starting to hunt and am looking at getting a rifle. My local Walmart has a Savage Axis XP in 30-06 and a Remington 700 in 7mm. They both seemed really nice and came with decent scopes. I've heard nothing but great things about Rem 700's and Savages but I don't know too much about the 7mm round. What do you shooter's/hunters out there think about the Axis and 700? Also 30-06 or 7mm? Should I try to find one of them in the other caliber? I am going to Bass pro and my local gun shop this week to see their selections, but My price range is 300 +/- and these two rifles fit that.

Update:

I thought that the 770 was the same as the 710, and it doesnt seem to get very good reviews from what i've seen.

I would get a Rem 700 in .30-06. If you local Walmart doesn't have it, see if they can order it. If not, try another Walmart. Depending upon your state, it may have to be another Walmart in the same state that you live in. As far as the 770s, they are 60 more of the same bad stuff as the 710. My nephew has one. It does not appear to be half as good as the other $300 rifles. It shoots OK, but the stock is rattly, the bolt is very rough and is overall a poor excuse for a $300 rifle. The Rem 700 is one of the best values in rifles. There are several 700s in the house in various configurations.

NOOOOOOO you cant even put a Remington 770 and 700 in the same category other than they are both bolt actions. To put it simply the Remington 770 is a piece of crap.

Ive never really looked at the Axis rifles much, but from what ive been reading -for the price you pay- the Savage Axis Rifles are good little shooters.

The Remington 700 your looking at im guessing is the SPS model? Accuracy wise they are decent the stocks on them are nothing to brag about and IMHO the finish of the guns are ok compared to what they could be.

If I were you I would get the Savage just becuase the .30-06 is a very versatile round and it is common. Sure the 7mm IMHO has a bit flatter trajectory and shoots a bit faster but ammo/bullet selection wise there are so many more choices for the .30-06 that you can hunt pretty much any North American animal with it, I wouldnt say the same for the 7mm. Not saying the 7mm isnt good, its a great cartridge but for someone just getting into hunting the -06 will serve you so much better.

Source(s): EDIT: and to my knowledge the Remington 700 or 770 does not come off the shelf chambered for .30-30, and the scopes that come with those package rifles are O.K. at best, not great but they should get the job done until you can upgrade.

    Savage Axis 30-06 Price

I have a Axis in a .223 i love it. the axis is a good gun. very accurate.

model 700 are good guns i don't own one but have shot many. i just shot a remington 700 7mm ultra mag. its a mean gun. i have a 7mm winchester short mag but its also a savage. a 7mm is a .28 cal.

for the price of the 30-06 axis you cant beat them. and there good bruch guns.

this might not help a hole lot but if you have the money go with a modle 700 remington. if not go with the axis.

Lots of rifles out there. I've found Remington and Savage to be great guns, but I have a suggestion that others may not have mentioned yet. Look at Tikka T3 models. I bought one about a year ago in .338 federal (another .308 based round) and have been simply amazed with the out-of-the-box accuracy and quality. They are made by Sako, and if you've ever shot one of those, you'll understand why the Tikkas perform so well. Check around, google Tikka rifles, and read the reviews. These are available for around $500, some with synthetic stocks are even less.

Here's the deal. A lot of the anti-770 sentiment is from people who have never fired the gun, and have just latched onto a few bad reviews made by people who had it out for the gun in the first place. The 770 is fine as a beginning rifle, and since you will get a warranty, if something goes wrong with the rifle you can get it fixed. I'm probably going to get a lot of thumbs down for that statement, but I stand by it.

The Savage Axis and Remington 700 are both good guns. The Axis is actually closer to the 770 in market position, though.

As for Wal-Mart, they can order a gun for you if they don't have it in stock. As such, I would suggest getting the 700 in .30-06 instead of 7mm Mag, since ammo for a .30-06 is much easier to find.

The Axis and 770/710 are both on the low end of quality. Many problems have plagued the 770 line from bolts breaking off to improper lug lapping making it hard to open and close the bolt and it's just a butt a** ugly gun in my oppinion. The Axis comes in a 2 yr limited manufacture's warranty if that tells you anything (cheap maybe)? But your looking over 2 other firearms that have a very good review rating from the public eye and firearm testers and they are the Marlin XS/XL7 line and Weatherby Vanguard. They also fit your $300+/- budget and the Marlin is available with a scope package and the accu-trigger as well and both are also available in stainless steel.

Source(s): I would defenitly look at my other options before I sunk money into something that holds no face value as soon as you walk out the door with it.

Ok friend, both are great intermediate rifles. the Remington 700 series is very affordable and the 7mm will take out any large game animal, as will the 30-06. I personally would prefer the remington because their craftmanship is top notch. Savage is very good, but it is like comparing a F150 to an F250. If you do go with the Remington, look up the 770 series, it is the same rifle, but comes with a pretty good scope. the remington 700/770 series comes in all calibers, 30-30, 300, 30-06, 7mm, 7mm magnum, etc. it is totally up to your preference, but like i said, the only difference between the 700 and the 770 is that the 770 comes with a scope.

=== idea for you=== go to budsgunshop.com. they offer the remington 770 series (with scope) in all calibers for $301 shipping included. Just bought a remington 770 series 30-06 and it was at my store in 3 days.
