January Great Barrier Reef Diving?
What is the downside of January or February diving on Great Barrier Reef Australia? It's cold here and that's the best time for me to go there. I like it hot - especially for diving, but everyone seems to suggest May - July is better. Well that's when it's nice here too, so no winter cold escape. Also, what are some good outfits/dive operators to dive with there.
Thank you all very much for the info. You have really convinced me it's best to wait for the better conditions there. I know the weather can be treacherous and that's not what I want. I don't want to risk a box jelly sting either and who wants less visibility? Also, thanks for the info on the dive operators - that can be priceless.

If you love huge crowds then go Quicksilver, but if you like a bit of personal attention and not so crowded, then Passions of Paradise from Cairns is great. They go to a couple of spots of the reef including a sandy cay. Quicksilver takes you to a man-made platform. I've been to both and in my opinion Passions is a much better trip and also cheaper. From Mission Beach, you can go out on the Quickcat which is another great trip. Whichever one you pick, the weather is really unpredictable in Jan/Feb. Could be pouring or could be sunny. If it's sunny then it's stinking hot! If it's raining (which it is right now), then it's a lot cooler, but the visibility on the reef is really poor. You could also be here when a cyclone is around, in which case you won't be going anywhere but indoors! You have to make a choice, come here in Jan/Feb and hope for the best or leave your nice weather and experience gorgeous weather and also the GBR, between May to October. November starting to get hot again, but not too bad.

There are a couple of major downsides..
1...It's the time of year when marine stingers are most prevalent.....these aren't to be messed with & can kill.
2...It's the middle of our tropical monsoon period in the tropics & the weather is unstable & unpredictable.
Not a good time to go ...far better to wait another 3 or 4 months .
The biggest Reef Tour operator out of Cairns is Quicksilver ....they do daily runs out of Cairns , Palm Cove & Port Douglas.

Yes, not a good idea. November is the start of the wet season, and it gets pretty wet in December. You'll have to expect rain every 2-3 days. The wetness peaks at January. Try May or June.

Tshnod, saw your question and looked out my window, and all I can see is a blanket of white still coming down, and you had to go and mention the great Barrier Reef.
Aussie is perfectly correct in what he is saying, also, I went with a couple of operators, and if I remember Quicksilver is one of the better ones.
@Aussie, been snowing since 4am, we have had 15cm and expecting a load more.
