  • Interference with remote control operation?

I never had this happen before. The other night I had 2 remotes not working - one for the DVD player and one for the satellite receiver - completely unrelated systems, but the one for the tv still worked fine. They would barely or not work if an inch away even. I changed the batteries in both - no difference. I put some christmas wrapper cardboard tubes together and the controls would work from one end of the tube with the other end right at the sensor. Finally after midnight they started working fine again. What could cause interference like that from outside or another house?

  • January Great Barrier Reef Diving?

What is the downside of January or February diving on Great Barrier Reef Australia? It's cold here and that's the best time for me to go there. I like it hot - especially for diving, but everyone seems to suggest May - July is better. Well that's when it's nice here too, so no winter cold escape. Also, what are some good outfits/dive operators to dive with there.

  • Do you agree or disagree with the auto industry bailout?

$25b for the big 3 automakers to survive or not? I can't believe they've run their companies to need that kind of money. They kept making oversized gas sucking trucks and suv's and now want money to change to smaller fuel efficient autos even though they've managed to stay in business this long w/o that. This is ridiculous. Please if someone can defend a bail out - convince me. But them threatening to cut thousands of jobs if there's no bailout is no defense - that's just blackmail on their part.

  • Isn't it time to define life in terms of substantive viability?

I don't think we can go backwards now after Roe V. Wade and define life as starting at conception - even though technically it probably does. But we have to do something about partial birth abortion or anything close to inhumane treatment of innocent victims. I think it's time to introduce a serious idea like substantive viability - anything with a heartbeat. The heartbeat defines life more than anything and the lack thereof - death. That leaves room for prevention and termination up to a point that I think most people can agree is even humane or semi-acceptable. I'm pro life but I think we need to find common ground stop keep it from being such a politically hot issue. Even if new pro life supreme court justices are selected - I think they should bring this idea into the decision process. Any thoughts?

  • MP3 format - 128kbps or 190+ kbps?

128kbps is supposedly "cd quality", but I was wondering if anyone uses higher or lower settings or notices any differences. Higher kbps rates result in larger file sizes so I was wondering what the optimal sound/file size rate is for players with less capacity.

  • Browser is hanging up on a couple of sites, including MS download for Windows XP SP3?

I just installed qwest with windows live for internet and it included IE7 which I apparently needed, so I installed that from their cd. I've uninstalled netzero and defragged my HD. Everything is working great except when I go to SIRIUS.com, the page hangs up. I'm on Windows XP Service Pak 2, but trying to download SP3 from microsoft it hangs up right when trying to start the download. I've retried several times over 2 different days, but same thing. Any suggestions? Thanks

  • Does anyone think SNL is actually funny anymore?

Was that their best stuff for the season opener? What a stupid show - but does anyone watch it because they think it's FUNNY? Madtv is on a different channel around the same time and it's pretty funny: Michael McDonald, Aries Spears, Bobby Lee - they're as good as when SNL had real actors like the original cast or Eddie Murphy, Will Ferrel, David Spade, Chris Farley, etc. (Sorry Adam Sandler was never funny and still isn't).

  • DSL 1.5Mbps vs. 7Mbps?

I'm trying to decide if 1.5Mbps is fast enough to avoid an extra $10/month for something I don't end up using or need (7Mbps). Does anyone have 1.5 mbps speed internet and do you get along with it ok? The minimum speed for VOD (video on demand) is 750kbps - does anyone use 1.5 for VOD? I don't use the internet all that much at home and will only use VOD occasionally. Who would rather slit their wrists than have 1.5mbps?

  • The EU is Winning in the Olympics medals count...

If you just add core EU: Italy, France, Germany, GBR - their medal counts are G-9, S-13, and B-8 for 30 total. It would be more fair to compare those numbers with US and China for a similar population count.

  • Why does NBC run olympic coverage from 8pm to 1am?

And leave the main events for the 11pm to 1am time slot? They are absolutely stupid this year doing that - I hope no one is watching them or their commercials. It would be nice to see what happened that day before 10pm so I can go to sleep at a normal time. Are they a bunch of idiots or does everyone else like what they're doing?

  • Do I have to use Qwest's modem for DSL or will any work?

...with Qwest DSL will other brands of modems work so I can shop competitively at Best Buy or something? I wouldn't think I'd actually need THEIR junk. I'd be getting a multi connection wireless networking modem with multiple ethernet ports for direct connections also - like for VOD for my satellite receiver. Also, I only have laptops and didn't plan on a permanent ethernet connection to a computer - is that required?

  • What do you think of another national 55mph speed limit?

This is being proposed by the democrats now for a new law to save gas. I think it's ridiculous to go back to that and force people to drive under 55 again after we just went through all of that and raised them back to where they are now. If people want to save gas they should have the CHOICE to drive slower - not be FORCED to. But yet everyone will FIGHT for their CHOICE for abortion which results in death, not just a slight increase in gas usage. WTF is going on in this country?
