Do longer CatV cables (ethernet) degrade or slow down a connection?

I only need up to 25 ft but was just wondering.

Update:

Thanks - several good answers already.

No it shouldnt be a problem. Cat 5 cables are good for more than 100m.

    Hope it helps :-)

Yes the length of the cable will decrease signal transmission speeds, but no the effects will not be noticeable on anything under a few hundred feet.

Cat 5 cables should not even be noticable. What you have to be wary of is running longer coax cables. They will degrade your performance.

There is a limit to how far you can run, but there won't be any reduction in speed over a given distance, when you consider the signal is moving along at roughly 186,000 miles/sec.

No. The length of the cable will not affect the speed of your internet connection.

Shouldn't be a problem. I ran up to 50 foot ones in my school with minimal degradation.

  • Ping rates can increase 25% but nothing new that a far range that a wireless signal can do to you..
