Allergy's and furnace filters question?

I have a kid very allergic to cats and dogs and the like. I have 2 furnaces. Would a real good furnace filter help her allergy reactions to go down and if so what is a less expensive good one to get? Is the thick 3 inch paper style the one to go with or electronic type?

Read this article on air filters http://www.furnacefiltercare.com/merv-ratings.php , and the link for Electronic air cleaners http://www.furnacefiltercare.com/electrostatic-fur... . The filters for your furnace will decrease air flow by increasing pressure drop, as their MERV ratings increase and may cause you problems with capacity, or nuisance trips. An electrostatic filter will not. Good filters are expensive, electrostatic can be cleaned. Select a filter with a rating between 4-11 and you should be okay with airflow. Filters thicker than the standard 1" may create less pressure drop, but in most cases will not fit in standard filter racks. Thickness has nothing to do with efficiency or the size of particles that are caught. You can use good filters in conjunction with an electronic one if you need more filtering. If your ducts are dirty they may need professional cleaning, and carpeting should be replaced if it is suspect. Do a thorough search for mold and mildew in kitchens, baths, and especially basements.

Recently I cut sugar and carbs from my diet and my allergies subsided. If you check out nutrition info and avoid foods considered inflammatory, this might help. You may want to go on ebay and buy an ozone machine. These also have help myself alllergies. A filter can help. But if the child is playing on the carpet, or sitting on a couch where the cats have been, you best option is lots of vacuuming. Cats seem to cause more alllergic reactions than dogs. You might have to get rid of cat. You could try all options. I was amazed what changing my diet did for allergies.
