How can I prove that the Marine Corps is a separate branch from the Navy?

I am trying to prove to a really arrogant individual by the user-name m249a1 that the United States Marine Corps and the United States Navy are two completely separate branch: http://www.youtube.com/all_comments?v=wc5XJUXMqRA

He keeps justifying that the the Marine Corps are a component of the Department of the Navy, but he fails to realize the Department of the Navy does not equal the the Navy (THE MILITARY BRANCH). The department is a civilian organization and is headed by a civilian (the Secretary of the Navy) which oversees the dealings of both naval branches which are the Marine Corps and the Navy.

Each branch of the military is commanded by a Joint Chief of Staff.

    There are 4 Joint Chiefs.

Have him look it up, but he will probably continue to deny it.

You're right! It is a separate branch, so I'm guessing that your friend is confused because the Marine Corps is a Department of the Navy... But just because it is a Department of the Navy doesn't mean that it's the same branch (it's a different one).

... You could get a Marine to knock the truth into him!!!

SEC. 606. [50 U.S.C. 426] (8) The term ‘‘Armed Forces’’ means the Army, Navy, Air

Force, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard.

So the USMC is it's own branch of Military.

However both The Marine Corps Branch and the Navy Branch both fall under the Civilian "Department of the Navy" As does the Branch of the US Coast Guard during time of war. During time of peace the USCG falls under Homeland Security Dept. (prior to that it fell to the Treasury department)

    SEC. 206. (a) [50 U.S.C. 409(b)] The term ‘‘Department of the

Navy’’ as used in this Act shall be construed to mean the Department of the Navy at the seat of government; the headquarters,

United States Marine Corps; the entire operating forces of the

United States Navy, including naval aviation, and of the United

States Marine Corps, including the reserve components of such

forces; all field activities, headquarters, forces, bases, installations,

activities and functions under the control or supervision of the

Department of the Navy; and the United States Coast Guard when

operating as a part of the Navy pursuant to law

Here's an analogy for him: The Department of Justice is composed of multiple agencies: the FBI, the US Marshals, the DEA...

Just because they're all a part of the DOJ does not make the FBI the same agency as the DEA or US Marshals, or vice versa.

Just because the Marine Corps and Navy are under the same department does not make them equal.

  • The Marine Corps has a Joint Chief of Staff known as the Commandant of the Marine Corps. He answers directly to the Secretary of the Navy. The Chief of Naval Operations (the USN's Joint Chief) also answers directly to the Secretary of the Navy. Neither the Commandant of the USMC or Chief of Naval Operations report to one another.

With m249a1's logic, the following would have to happen in order for his/her statement to be true:

    1. Commandant of the Marine Corps answers to the Chief of Naval Operations. Not directly to the Secretary of the Navy.

    and

    2. The Commandant of the Marine Corps is not a member of the Joint Chief of Staff.

Neither of these two scenarios are happening.

*I explained this in the most simplest manner for him. Don't stress over this- ppl on youtube are sometimes retarded. Sometimes you can't fix stupid. If this user was in the military, shame on him.

The Marine Corps are in the Department of Navy because they're land, sea, and air. The Navy is just sea...

    The other guy is correct...quote:

"The Department of the Navy consists of two uniformed Services: the United States Navy and the United States Marine Corps."
