How many miles is it safe to drive after your car needs an oil change?

My maintenance light came on last week and I've driven about 1200 miles since then (been all over FL visiting family). I know this is bad.

Anyways, I'm going to be going back to college and leaving my car for my parents (basically, I want them to do it and pay for it instead of me) in a few days.

I shouldn't be doing too much driving until then.

Will my car be alright?

if its an old car... like a 1990 or so then I would make sure to do it every 3000, but if its newer you can hold out until around 6000.

First, You are kind of a dick for making your parents take care of your car but they raised you so it is probably the natural order.

Otherwise unless you drove 6k past the interval, it is no big deal... Believe me I have listened to some of the biggest cry baby lube tech's wine about someone going 6 hundred miles past the mileage on the window sticker, but just as anyone else they just want to have control over their niche in society.

Florida is not really a very harsh environment for a car so it is no big deal unless the engine started knocking because it got low on oil.

We had regular upkeep and that i did positioned a timing belt on it at 145K yet there is your evidence. stable luck for my area i exploit Mobil One in ever engine I very own and that's a number of

Changing our oil regularly is the bet thing u can do for your car. The longer u drive, the dirtier and thicker your oil gets. It gums up in your engine and can cause long term damage.

Probably not. You might be doing damage that is going to cost your parents money, when it might be something simple now, if it's not too late. At least stop and get it checked. Good luck.

Sending you to college just wasn't good enough I guess..... hmmmm

you can go as many miles as you like until the motor seizes up and then you just replace the engine.

    good luck

Source(s): 25 years in auto industry and the standard interval is usually 3k miles or 3 months but with newer synthetic oils some people choose to go 5k miles and even 10k miles on interval but I do not reccomend 10K. I myslef use synthetic and go 5k intervals
