Can eating at night cause diabetes?

We know that lack of sleep can predispose for diabetes*, but I was wondering if eating at night can have a similar effect?

* For the details, see this story from the UK's Daily Mail: http://www.google.co.uk/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=lack%20of...

''People who sleep fewer than six hours a night are at greater risk of blood sugar problems that lead to diabetes, researchers say.''

Update:

Sorry the link to the Daily Mail article is here:

if you are doing a paper on uncommon causes of diabetes, you really should know the difference between the types of diabetes. eating one meal late in the day does NOT cause diabetes, however, research has shown a correlation in that pattern of eating among a small but significant number of type 2 diabetics. It is not a cause, but may be a clue to another metabolic process disorder which might contribute to the development of diabetes. The article I read was interesting, but I can't remember which magazine it was (Diabetes Forecast, maybe). It was several years ago. Diabetes (type 2) can be caused by some medications (side effect). Sometimes it is reversable when the person stops using that medication. Sometimes not. Since type 2 can be managed very well, many patients that truely need the medication choose to keep taking them. Type 1 diabetes can be a result of severe starvation (many WW2 POWs developed diabetes because of this, one was a family member of mine).

Only in that obesity can contribute to insulin resistance. Eating doesn't cause diabetes. Thinking that it does is the same as thinking that a high fever causes the flu.

Neither lack of sleep or too much sleep causes diabetes.

I highly doubt it. My mama has diabetes and the doctors said nothing about night eating being a cause of diabetes.
