The second amendment is pointless. People now adays are too fat and happy to go in revolt. People don't really want ''freedom'' they want security and comfort. As long as people have a roof over their head, good food, clean water and free porn why would they want to risk everything on a revolt? People have families, responsibilities they want to live their boring pointless lives in relative comfort, not become urban guerrillas. If you gave the average person a choice between their right to vote, and 10% of their yearly income, which do you think they'd choose. People as a rule have no ambition, no motive for living accept hedonistic pleasure. They don't care about corruption. They only whine about it when things are looking down, and they feel like corruption is hurting THEM! No body complains when the economy is rising. If elections where suspended today, and every body got $10,000s in exchange they'd probably be happy. Get real. No body's gonna use their ''second amendment rights'', until the country looks like afghanistan or somalia. Those who do will be rightly called terrorists and locked up. People don't want your ''freedom'', they want their children to come home from school alive every day. They want want to deal whit gun fire and car bombs. Give people want they want; it isn't freedom. It's safety. No body's gonna ''stand up to the man'', nobody cares. Nobody wants to join your little revolt. Nobody cares about our ''democracy index'', they care about their income, and little else.

Depends upon how you rate a country. There is a great deal to be said about the USA but it is a very divided society and there is not any guarantee of health care. The USA has a two party system whereas other countries have multi party democracies so their governments perhaps represent a wider section of their respective societies.

I think the idea of being able to defend oneself makes the USA top! Here in the UK you just get done over, the perpetrator gets a light sentence and the idea is that this makes a better society. Maybe for the perpetrators!

On a personal level US military might ensures a level of safety (you won't get invaded anytime soon), and a level of comfort (cheap oil mostly) but like you point out that same military might is a threat to your constitution in that it is unlikely today that the population could rise and overthrow the government should need arise, it would quickly be put down no matter how many handguns and rifles the population had. Waging frequent wars is also the biggest factor for why USA is disliked by those who dislike it in other countries.

On the other hand I think US still rates high when it comes to personal freedom (with notable exception of recreational drug use) people seem free to do whatever they like with themselves and starting a business is nowhere easier. A good country for the individualist.

If military might makes you happen, then great, but most people would rather have things like healthcare, jobs, less crime etc etc.

The US is only democratic because it tells everyone it is. Two parties who are so corrupt it is incredible, who act on behalf of big business, advertise themselves like McDonalds and Coca-Cola so people think they have something good, when the reality is they are eating rat or sugared water.

The United States is the world's largest economy, and strongest military, but that doesn't make it great. Many civil liberties in the U.S are being quietly stripped, corporations have a greater influence in politics than the people, and minorities still face prejudice and discrimination. Gay marriage is federally banned, something many industrialized nations allow, and freedom of speech is quietly being manipulated. Universal health care doesn't exists , and you have a military that works for corporate gain and out's democratically elected government's around the world who disagree with them. I could go on, but neh.
