Why don't the Courts want me to watch South Park?
My parents are divorced and South Park was brought up at a court session. Well, the judge said I can no longer watch South Park. We are going to have another court session soon and I want them to understand why South Park effects me in a good way. Could you please tell me if you think the show effects me in a good way? Or if you think that I'm mature enough to watch it? If you don't think so, please tell me.
Oh, and don't let your point revolve around the fact that South Park made fun of something you belonged to or thought they shouldn't make fun of. Matt and Trey make fun of everyone. Don't focus your point on if it's funny or not!
Anyways, I have this written up... After reading it can you answer my questions above? Thank you:
I'm 13, and I've watched South Park ever since I was 12.
Look, how are kids going to know about reality and "sad facts" if you try to hide it from them their whole life? I have my parent's permission, but I know I don't need it. I'm a mature girl who can handle it. I'm very good at politics and debating, how? Because I know things that other parents hide from their kids. If I never watched South Park or an R rated movie, I wouldn't be as smart as I am now
I'm probably more mature than most my age because there is no boundaries for me, my parents don't hide things for me and I realize that society isn't perfect. I'm very political and I can debate about things with adults that most kids my age wouldn’t know what we are talking about.
Boundaries help kids (around the age of 10-12 NOT 3-8) think the world is a perfect place, when it isn't. It keeps them from forming their own opinions about situations.
South Park has taught me to look at situations in a perspective that not a lot of other people look at it. It teaches me to make fun of myself. That you can't stereotype others without stereotyping yourself.
It also teaches me that when two people are in a fight and both points are just plain stupid.. that it's okay to be in the middle, laughing at both of them. It has taught me that every religion is stupid in it's own way (I'm Jewish). It has taught me that to every argument is a flaw.
It has taught me that cursing shouldn't be used in every sentence of my daily language. Yet, it's okay to when I'm strictly with my friends. Cursing doesn't make me look "cool" in anyway, so, why over use it?
It teaches me to question authority, but to still respect it.
It teaches me to not look at things like everyone else tells me too. It teaches me that it's okay to think a little differently and not to follow the crowd.
It teaches me that just because someone had authority, doesn't always mean that they are right all the time.
South Park has made me a better me. I'm now into politics and comedy. I want to write like Trey and Matt can. I'm making better grades than I ever had. I'm learning to take chances and to love life. I'm learning to laugh at people who can't laugh at themselves. I've learned that it's very much okay to be laid back and laugh at life.
Thanks for your time!
I understand where MC is coming from, but that's the thing. Its not negatively impacting me. It has made me better in so many ways.
That's only half the reason why I'm so mature. My mother emotionally abuses me and calls me things I shall not dare to repeat.
South Park has shown me a way of knowledge that I've never known before.

How in the world did you watching South Park become an issue in a court of law?!?
South Park is nothing more than social satire. The fact that a judge finds it necessary to censor it shows that it has an effect. John Steinbeck's "The Grapes of Wrath," and J.D Salinger's "Catcher in the Rye," were both banned in some places, but both writers were considered two of the best in all of US literature. Would the judge ban you from reading classic novels, too?
You need to somehow tell your parents to grow up if they're making a television show an issue in THEIR divorce. Once again, a kid becomes a pawn in the parents' bitterness.
Sure South Park is crude, but it does show up some of the stupidity in society, and they Trey and Matt have plenty of material to draw from. Maybe you could send a letter to Trey and Matt outlining your predicament, it might give them a good idea for an episode. Your situation is quite comical, if you take Trey and Matt's point of view.
The adults are being childish in this one, and no one more so than a judge who would censor what you watch.

Unfortunately, I am not able to support your position. Something that most young people fail to understand is that while you believe you are more mature than most, and you may very well be, there is a distinct lack of life experience in your 13 years that would normally lend itself to a healthy appreciation for adult comedy. Perhaps, the judge is concerned that the unfiltered stimuli you are getting from your parents and television will have a negative impact on your emotional development because you don't have the tools to be able to process the information you receive?
One last thing to consider: In the grand scheme of things, is South Park vital to your happiness, or are you choosing it as your hill to die on? Maybe you should acquiesce on South Park and save your energy to pick a more weighty fight? If you're able to maturely prioritize the importance of issues in your life, the adults in your life may realize that you're a lot more mature than your age suggests. Just a thought.

Wow you're like my twin. I live south park sooo much and nobody understands me. I know everything about that show. And I try to tell people that it DOES teach me, but they don't understand. Nobody gets it when I try to explain it to them! Anyway, that's a really good speech, I completely agree with it! :)

I think you pretty much get it. Just say what you said, and if they still say no.... you can watch when they're not watching.
