It took a little fiddling with words - changing "literature" to "classics" - but I hope this helps you, because I thought it was a good question.

Popularity and cultural relevance for the most part. Some authors are incredibly overrated, but it's not going to stop your teachers from shoving them down your throat. Deal with it, get your grade, then read what you want.
