  • I need some ideas of good sci-fi novels as my brother doesn't seem to like anything else. Any suggestions?

My brother and I were chatting about books the other day and he mentioned never knowing what to buy/read because he can never find anything that he likes. I got him to read the first Hunger Games novel and he admitted to enjoying it, however was not a fan of the romance involved. I have now convinced him to read I Am Number Four, but he hasn't started it yet.

Do you guys have any ideas for other sci-fi novels that a teenage boy might enjoy?

  • I need some books to read that are more of a challenge/really leave me thinking?

So, as a typical teenage girl, I've read all of Sophie Kinsella's books, the Twilight saga, the Hunger Games series, and absolutely LOVE the Stephanie Plum series by Janet Evanovich (of course there are many more books I have read). Despite loving all these books and the many other I've read, they don't really leave me feeling challenged or left with something to really think about.

Books like Gone With the Wind, The Great Gatsby, To Kill a Mockingbird, and more recently, Thirteen Reasons why have left me feeling more inspired and influenced after the read and I'm looking for books that have more of that effect. I'm up for just about anything, however don't really do well with things that have a real "scary" or "haunting" vibe. Classics would be amazing, but so would more modern stories. I have no problem with reading comprehension, so it's okay if it's not an "easy read". Any of your recommendations would be fantastic. Thanks!

  • In The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo trilogy, why is Mikael Blomkvist nicknames Kalle?

I'm currently half way through the second of the three books and have come across an instance where someone mentions understanding why he was nicknamed "Kalle". I know this isn't very significant to the story, but I'm curious, so does anyone have any ideas as to why he's nicknamed this?

I have some acne scars (nothing too serious) that I would like to get rid of or at least fade. Are there any products out there that will do that, would Bio Oil work?

  • Ashley on a boy......?

I'm not pregnant, but I recently read Gone With the Wind, and as some of you may know, the man that Scarlett is chasing after is named Ashley. This reminded me that Ashley was originally a male name and I sort of fell in love with it, and now find it more handsome and strong sounding than pretty and feminine.

So opinions on this? Could Ashley come back as a boys name? Or do you think that too many people are stuck on the idea that it's a fully feminine name, like what's happened to Madison, and is happening to names such as Riley, Cameron, Ryan, Logan, Braeden and Hunter? I doubt I'd ever name a boy Ashley, maybe give it as a middle name, because of its popularity on a girl, but I really wish it could turn around and be seen on boys again.

  • Please comment on the intro to this essay: What is most important to you?

SO to start of the semester in English, my teacher wants us to write an essay about what is important to us just to see where we're at and the get a feeling for who we are. I was wondering if you could please comment on my intro just so i can get some feedback of whether or not i seem to be on a good track. Please no unnecessarily rude comments, but don't be afraid to tell me if you don't like it. If you don't just say why! I'm not changing my blueprint. :)

    Here it is:

A variety of people in the world today struggle with the question which no man has ever really been able to give a generalized and truly accurate answer to for all people: Why were we even put on this planet and given life if we are all going to die anyway? One may come about this dilemma when the years start to slip by unnoticed, leaving only that dreadful feeling of “too much to do, and not enough time to do it in”. Or perhaps a loss, be it of innocence, love, or any other matter of importance has taken hold of one’s being, and has put his/her whole grasp of a purpose into new light, turning life upside-down and shaking violently until one may not even remember why he/she was here in the first place. The concepts of purpose and importance in one’s life certainly go hand in hand. As each aspect of one’s life most likely has some sort of purpose, the importance of those purposes then go on to become the drive for what one will live life by. The tricky thing is, one purpose cannot be generalized for all people since all people find different aspects of life important. In a life such as my own however, the sport of hockey, education and learning, and relationships with family and friends are the most important aspects, and serve to be where a purpose in life is derived from.

  • Why do you all say nothing about evolution was an accident or just "created"?

I'm not going to go on a little rant about how the Bible is real and whatnot, I personally believe in evolution, and I do believe in other things as well, even if it isn't necessarily any type of divine thing like God; so please just listen.

Not all evolution happens from environmental stresses, so yes, evolution can happen randomly and on accident.

This is quite rare, but there are times when mutations happen in genes. When these mutations are beneficial, they can often cause evolution. These mutations are in fact random. So please, know your stuff before you say something, if you don't it's only going to bring criticism and won't help you to prove your point at all.

  • A shoutout to all you crazy R&Sers: Does an afterlife take away meaning from your life on Earth?

This isn't me trying to prove to you that God is or isn't real, just stating my opinion.

As great as an afterlife seems, don't lyou think going to a "better place" takes away purpose from your life right now? We only have 80 ish years to live, and that time gives everything so much more meaning. By having an afterlife, it's like saying you don't really need to find purpose in this life, because the next one is the one that counts. When I think of that, it sort of makes me think that I would just want to get this life over with, and only do a half-assed job at it, rather than live it to its fullest.

    "Take death for example.

A great deal of our effort goes into avoiding it.

We make extraordinary efforts to delay it and often consider

    its intrusion a tragic event.

Yet we'd find it hard to live without it.

Death gives meaning to our lives. It

gives importance and value to time.

Time would become meaningless if there were too much of it.

If death were indefinitely put off, the human psyche would end

up, well, like the gambler in the "Twilight Zone" episode."

I find this incredibly deep and very true, especially the part about time, but when I think of religion, I think it takes meaning away from something so well put such as the quote above (taken from an inspirition to the Our Lady Peace album Spiritual Machines.)

  • Why is it okay for Christians to "flex their muscles" but not other religions?

I'm just wondering, why is it that Christians say they have an all forgiving God, and blah blah blah, and find it okay for them to preach their word and whatnot, but not others?

Who's to say other Gods didn't come before this one? Are people really THAT ignorant and arrogant as to say "I'm right and you're wrong, so you're going to Hell"? Isn't THAT a sin? You don't even know if you're really right, you say you have the Bible, but other religions have objects like that too.

I know all you Christians believe there is only one God, but please would you shut up about it being the only God, some people believe in different things, and saying that that is wrong is saying people aren't allowed to have an opinion.

Clearly religion leads to tunnel vision, ignorance, and the inability to accept the beliefs of others.

    AMEN.

  • post-ACL reconstruction? Please help?

So on Tuesday I had ACL reconstruction surgery on my knee, they graphed part of a tendon out of my hamstring, then reattached it as a ligament. I didnt feel any pain the first two days and could already meet the requirements for the first phase of my physio the next day, most likely due to the pain killers.

On Thursday, when I was at home, i did my physio for the first time. Afterwards however, especially after the second round (Im supposed to do it 2-3 times a day) my knee really started to hurt, especially on the back outside of it, as well as the upper inside. The next day, it still hurt, but not quite as bad as the night before. So i did one round of physio, then we went to my grandparents house. My mom said not to take my icing machine and by the time we got home about 3-4 hours later, i was in excruciating pain. I skipped my second round of physio, took some more pain meds (I'm on a 4=6 hour cycle) and went to bed, with my ice machine thing attached.

This morning when i woke up, the pain was tolerable, but i still cannot walk very well with my crutches, and my ankle was swollen and hot, I also had a touch of afever. I wrapped my leg up and then went to have a shower to see if it would help, and it did. My foot is still a tad swollen, but everything else is fine. My knee still hurts and I'm nervous to do my physio today.

So, my question is, is this normal? Any doctors or other fellow reconstructed ACL people, how long did you experience pain for after you surgery? How long before you were able to walk with decent comfort without crutches? And, was your physio quite difficult?

.Sorry for the length of this, I just though i should try to give you guys as much detail as I could/

  • Acne help? Please, I really need help?

So I know I asked this before, but I didn't get an answer. I'm 16 years old, and swear I'm not just looking for attention or trying to ask stupid questions or anything. I'm using the "Women's Health" category because I find that women on this site are generally more serious and knowledgeable than men, especially when it comes to things like this.

As of about 3 months ago, I've been having troubles with acne. Mostly it's been on my cheeks, and simply won't go away! I mean, makeup covers it up fairly well (without using too much of course), but I'm not a huge fan of makeup, and would like if I could have a relatively clear face again, like I did before.

I'm not sure if this was caused from stress, or what, and have been using Neutrogena Acne Control for about 2 months. Does anyone know of any other products that work well, or better at clearing up acne? And will I be left with many scars? If so, is there any way to reduce them, without using surgery?

Thanks so much for all your help.

  • I need help manipulating the equation for the doppler effect?

The original equation is fd=(vw/(vw+/-vs)) fs

    fd=apparent frequency

vw=velocity of the wave, or the speed of sound

vs=velocity of the source, +if its moving away from you, - if its moving toward you

    fs=actual frequency

so if i have to solve for vw, what would the formula look like, and how did you figure it out? and for vs?

  • What do you think of my family's names?

    Parents:

    Donald Lucien

    Heather Lynn

    Kids:

    Nicole Rachelle

    Derian Nicholas

    Shelbie Joelle

Criticism is fine, but this has already been done, i wasnt in control, so dont be overly harsh about hownobody should ever name their kid that. Keep in mind that Rachelle is NOT Rachel, and that my parents names are from a different generation.

  • I'm out of books, suggestions for a good read?

I've read all the books on my shelf, most of them more than once, and would like something new, but I'm not really into browsing for books haha. I like mysteries, but not Hardy Boys type stuff, and not horror, more the Janet Evanovich type, or more serious. I also like romance novels, and just fiction novels in general I guess! Humour and wittyness is great, as well as more serious stuff!

Also, I'm 16 so if you know any good books for someone my age, that would be great!

Not into all the weird dragon/vampires/cult type stuff though, or biographies haha
