post-ACL reconstruction? Please help?
So on Tuesday I had ACL reconstruction surgery on my knee, they graphed part of a tendon out of my hamstring, then reattached it as a ligament. I didnt feel any pain the first two days and could already meet the requirements for the first phase of my physio the next day, most likely due to the pain killers.
On Thursday, when I was at home, i did my physio for the first time. Afterwards however, especially after the second round (Im supposed to do it 2-3 times a day) my knee really started to hurt, especially on the back outside of it, as well as the upper inside. The next day, it still hurt, but not quite as bad as the night before. So i did one round of physio, then we went to my grandparents house. My mom said not to take my icing machine and by the time we got home about 3-4 hours later, i was in excruciating pain. I skipped my second round of physio, took some more pain meds (I'm on a 4=6 hour cycle) and went to bed, with my ice machine thing attached.
This morning when i woke up, the pain was tolerable, but i still cannot walk very well with my crutches, and my ankle was swollen and hot, I also had a touch of afever. I wrapped my leg up and then went to have a shower to see if it would help, and it did. My foot is still a tad swollen, but everything else is fine. My knee still hurts and I'm nervous to do my physio today.
So, my question is, is this normal? Any doctors or other fellow reconstructed ACL people, how long did you experience pain for after you surgery? How long before you were able to walk with decent comfort without crutches? And, was your physio quite difficult?
.Sorry for the length of this, I just though i should try to give you guys as much detail as I could/

I tore my ACL in December of 2010 and had the same reconstruction done as you. My pain was excruciating as soon as the anesthesia wore off, even while on morphine I was not comfortable. I had a friend who went through the same surgery a week after I did and she experienced a lot of pain as well. I do not know if it is normal for all reconstruction patients, but it does seem common. As far as your physical therapy goes, my advice would be make sure you do not push yourself too far and end up doing more harm than good. Do as much as you can and then make sure to ice it afterwards. If you keep having the same amount of pain or if it becomes unbearable, call the doctor. The worst thing that could happen would be for him to say it is normal, and you are better safe than sorry. I hope everything works out for you :)
