Okami(Wii) "fishing" help?

So I have the game Okami(Wii). I just finished blooming the Gardian Sapling and deafeated Waka in Agata Forest.

Anyway, there's this little guy in a rabbit hat (Kusamo? Kikiosko? I forgot his name) He cryed, said he lost his key or watever, and I tried to fish it out of the river for him.

I tried all of the "tips" they(the game) gave me, and followed the directions, but he always falls in the water!!

How do I fish?

Also, is this neccesary to "continue" the game? Or is this a side quest to earn Praise?

Update:

The meter never fills up. It's always empty and the fish comes really close to the shore and then he falls in. I read it like 3 times

You need it to continue the game.

The kid falls because there's a meter on the top when you're fishing, it begins to fill up and if it does the kid will fall. You have to stop pushing the stick of the nunchuck for a little bit to avoid this metter to fill completely.

This is mentioned in the instrucions on how to fish, remember to read everything.
