Change thermal couple on propane tank heater?

Does the length of thermal couple matter?

    Actually it is called a "thermocouple"...

    Anyway, I assume you mean the length of the tube between the tip and the threaded connection. That distance is not critical, but should be kept as short as practical. The length of the tip however CAN be important. The pilot flame must contact the tip properly or it will not generate the required output to hold the gas valve open. Especially when using universal thermocouples rather than original manufacturer parts, you need to pay close attention to this.
