What is this strange place in the Bering Straight?

I was skimming through Google Maps today and found this curious island in the Bering Straight ( 51.993813, -176.093459 ) You can zoom in until you see the wrecked landing pier ... so it is definitly a man-made settlement, propably abandoned. But what are those circle shaped structures for that are scattered along the path leading away from the beach? Anyone any ideas? I would also like to ehar the wildest theories :P

Not theories, the Japanese set up a bases on Atu and Kiska Islands from which to ultimately launch attacks on the U.S. Mainland. They were finally driven off by U.S. forces in about 1944. Lots of stuff left there, probably equipment igloos.

My guess would be an abandoned whaling station, looking it up does not confirm that.

Explains it as a volcano - maybe this is just a landing place for geologists.
