Who/when are you expected to tip?

The tipping culture always confuses me. I tend to feel a need to tip people in service jobs, like food service, maid services, valet drivers, etc.

I would like some other people's opinion or understanding of tipping etiquette. What do you use as your determination if tipping is appropriate? Is it the service provided? The amount of money you think they make? Etc

Update:

FYI I tip most service related persons. Taxi drivers, valet drivers, delivery drivers, food servers in sit-down situations, hotel maid services and really most hotel people like the bell hop, room service, etc.

I tip my hair stylist.

I tip most food service 20%, but if they were lower service, I might do 15%, or in really bad service, 10%.

Update 2:

Of course, I am from a tourist/Casino based economy, so we tend to have more tip expectations. You hit the jackpot, there are even more people to tip!

And I forgot the bartender and cocktail waitresses!

I think this is actually a really good question. I know some times it is quite insulting to leave a tip. Such as leaving money on a girl's nightstand.

Realistacly, tipping is not something that is mandatory although it is often highly expected in some cases... such as the bartenders and servers. The bottom line remains the same. You can tip your mailman if you want and there would be nothing wrong with it.

I personally try to avoid basing tips on their wages. When people do things for me personally, that is grounds for a tip. Such as the person cleaning up "my" mess in the hotel room or the person parking "my" car.

You could see it differently but the person coming out to hook up "my" cable is not doing that for me but doing it for the cable company. Therefore it is the cable company that pays them.

In the USA you have to tip a waiter 15-18% (18-20 if you have a party of 6 or more) at the end of your meal because they make only 2-3 dollars per HOUR by law as a waiter. They depend on tips. However if the service is terrible then I would leave 15 or less percent tip.

Everyone else tipping is really optional. Usually women tend to feel the need to tip people more than men I have found. If you feel someone did a great job then tip them a few dollars.

I found in a hotel (if you can afford it) tip 5 dollars each day you are there for the maid service. They really appreciate it and will tend to leave you extra shampoo and such in your room. Apparently it is rare for them to get a tip or a 5 dollar tip is really special to them. They make about minimum wage so tips really help them out.
