2001 Mazda 626 Gear Problems?
I was coming down a snowy mountain. To prevent from sliding and wrecking I put the car in first gear for about 3 miles. When I finally got a leveled road and put it in drive the car was driving like it was still in 1st gear. The RPMs were going up but the speed wouldn't go past 25 mph no matter how much I tried.
I finally pulled over into a parking lot and tried to going into Reverse but the car kept going forward. I put it on park and the car was still rolling forward. I turned the car off and back on and then it didn't start. The dashboard comes on and it lets me change the shifter to all the drives but it doesn't turn on. It doesn't click or anything. No noises happened when it wouldn't go past 1st gear.
Does someone have any idea what it could be? Someone is going to go look at it later but I'm terrified that it will be an expensive problem. So I'm trying to get suggestions/ideas to calm my nerves. Thank you
Bo, is that costly or easy to fix?

check the fluid if it smells burnt you fried the transmission.you wiped out the forward frictions that's why you have forward in everything there stuck in the open position and can't return allowing the transmission to go into reverse

My first thought is that you may have knocked the shift cable off, or maybe have broken it. The shifter would still work, but nothing's happening underneath. Since it isn't in neutral (that switch is on the transmission), it will not start as the neutral safety switch is open, keeping it from starting. Since it is in first, then it cannot be in park... need to lift it up and see what happened, I'd bet it won't be too bad.
