the big main difference was the impact of the advancements of weapons. Weapons had been so far advanced from the time of the American Civil War and the 1870-71 Franco Prussian War that the tactics and strategies of implementation for formations on battle fields couldn't keep up. This became a big awakening effect and is the single most important reason we see the development of trench warfare.

It started with horses and by the end of the war was mostly mechanized, tanks and aircraft debuted, frequent use of chemical warfare (mustard gas was popular) so gas masks also made a first appearance, it was also had the last true cavalry charge even though there were attempted cavalry charges in World War 2, they didn't just ended up with a lot of dead pols and therefore don't count.
