Knocking noise in front, driver-side wheel when drive over bumps, snow.?
2004, Nissan Xterra, 4WD
Today was the first day I heard this noise, and it was below 20 degrees this morning. There is a knocking noise (and vibration I can feel in my feet) coming from the driver's side front wheel only, whenever I hit a bump, drive over uneven pavement, or through the snow. It happens regardless of whether I'm in 2WD or 4WD. It does not happen when I make a turn, and there is no squeaking.
1. What could this be?
2. How long can I continue to drive safely with the current problem?

You shouldn't really drive it any longer until you find out what it is. It could be a bad ball joint, or some other linkage issue. If you don't know how get under the truck to check it, take it to a repair garage, not the stealership.
I would suggest going to cartalk.com, joining (it's free), and looking in the mechanics file for a reputable shop near you. Or, ask some friends if you don't know a shop. It will need an alignment after the repairs. Try to steer clear of major brand places too, like Firestone and Goodyear. Firestone told me I needed new brake pads when I took my truck in for an alignment, and I had just put new pads on.

It could be that your suspension is worn out, and needs replacement. The knock could be that the weel hits it's maximum suspension level and hits cold steel, instead of being pushed back by the suspension spring.
