Has anyone ever seen someone use an EBT card for ONLY healthy food?

Why is it that every time I see someone using their EBT (food stamp) card at the store, they have at least some junk food (sometimes it's 100% junk food)? Why do working people have to buy soda, chips, candy, and such for people who receive food stamps?

The cries from the left are that these people would starve in the streets if we didn't give them our money. However, junk foods are LUXURIES. You don't need candy bars, potato chips, and Pepsi to survive. In fact, we supposedly have an obesity epidemic. Could this be the reason why? If we really care about these people, shouldn't we program the cards so that they are no good for crap food?

I've also noticed that about 90% of them go on to buy cigarettes after using my tax money to buy their food. If they have money for smokes, why do they still need my money?

Good point. No. In college, I worked at Walmart and people bought junk food, junk food, and more junk food! A fellow cashier even had someone try to buy a new TV with food stamps (I can't make this stuff up!)

However, I KNOW for a fact that you can get healthy food with EBT cards. The frozen veggies, grilled chicken breasts, etc were all labeled "WIC Approved"

People with food stamps generally have hungry children and many of them have lost their jobs. Some are losers, yes, but not all. I work in a Court, have one of the best paying jobs in my poor county and would qualify for a small amount of food stamps, I don't go through the hassle to get.

The question you should be asking is why is junk for so much cheaper than healthy foods? When I go to the store to buy food for my four children I found that when I try to buy only healthy foods and snacks my bill is twice as much. I still buy the healthy foods, but I wonder why they are drastically more expensive. People on food stamps have to usually budget out $400 in food stamps for food for the whole month. I am not condoning buying junk food with food stamps, I am just stating a fact. A mother could buy 25 packs of kool aid for the price of one bottle of apple juice. (I never bought kool aid for my kids, I hate it, but do you get the point).

The fact is that most americans buy junk food, food stamps or not. I don't think you can blame the obesity epidemic on food stamps.

WIC approved is Women Infants and Children's program. It is not food stamps. Pregnant, nursing mothers and young children get vouchers for juice, peanut butter, cheese, cereal, formula and beans (no frozen meat).

No, because I know some really decent, hard-working people who have been the victim of hard circumstances, such as job lay-offs, that were not due to their own fault. Food stamps keep people from being hungry. I'm thankful that they are there for those who need them. As a food pantry volunteer, I can tell you that even WITH food stamps, people still don't have enough food to get through until the next month.

Yeah! Get big government out of our lives! And tell those "welfare queens" exactly what they can and cannot buy with their food stamps!

    /sarcasm

Dude, people on EBT buy trashy food, because that's what's cheap. You think they're going to spend $5.00 on an organic pear to give one kid a snack, or $5.00 on 5 bags of chips to give their family snacks all month?

Also, why do you think they should only buy healthy food, don't you ever enjoy junk food?

They have money for cigarettes BECAUSE you give them money for food. And you're right -- they buy junk food and TV dinners because they're too lazy to cook; probably an indication that they're too lazy to work rather than get their EBT cards replentished every month.

Honestly I don't care what they buy...if they want to buy steak or junk food, it doesn't matter to me, because they are only given a certain amount each month and if they can't budget that, then they will starve the rest of the month.

So now you want to regulate what people eat?

Who cares? If this really bothers you than you're no better than Michelle Obama. Let people use their food stamps for what they want to use them for, If they're too stupid to make healthy decisions it's their fault not mine.

I'm not going to tell someone what they can and cannot eat regardless if I'm helping to pay for it or not.

When you take a girl out on a date do you tell her she has to order the chicken tenders and she can't have a burger?

    Didn't think so.

My husband has worked over 40 years of his 62 years of life.. Several of those years he worked two jobs, to a lot me the luxury of staying home with our daughters when they were not in school yet...and the last three years so I could recognize my dream of running a canine rescue for fear aggressive dogs who are going to be put down....I began working part time as a waitress when I was 15 and continued to work until I married and had my children, going back to work when they were school age....four weeks ago, he was diagnosed with third stage cancer, and when he asked his physician and then his oncologist for a release to go back to his job of driving a flat bed truck until all the tests were ran and a plan of treatment/surgery was decided, they both willingly gave him a written release to return to work with no restrictions. But when he took them into his company bosses, the owner stated in our presence, "No driver with cancer will drive my trucks because you will only be thinking of the cancer and wont keep your mind on your job...you cant work for us until you no longer have cancer" When my husband asked him what he was to do about paying our mortgage and bills the owner responded, "Any REAL MAN can get a job anywhere whether he has cancer or not if he really wants to...Most just want to sit on their asses...." Isnt it enough to find you might lose your life, your home, cars, everything we have worked our whole lives for without coming on this page to see what so many think of people who have to receive assistance? My husband and I have never ever sought help for our bills, food, anything until now...Four weeks ago we had a savings account- a nice retirement nest egg that we have held onto for over 20 years. Our bills were not only paid on time, but early each month.....now we have very little left in the bank and no money coming in at all...We have people encouraging us to sue the company as it plainly is discrimination, but our fight right now has to be to try to save my husband's life.....But for the Grace of God.....Someday all of you who judge so quickly will realize that it could just as easily be you in my husband's shoes.....Please .....STOP and THINK before you speak.....do you really think all of us want to take help from the government? do you think some of us would gladly never buy any junk food as long as we could buy toilet tissue and soap? and how do I now take care of our four dogs-that we have rescued and had for 6-14 years? Maybe you need to be grateful and blessed....four short weeks ago we had a "charmed life" today we are looking at losing everything, including my husband's life......Stop judging.....for many of us, it hurts more than you will hopefully ever know

Yes, all the time. And if they are getting what you say they're getting, you should report the store to the authorities. Did you ever think of that?

I've seen them used to buy better cuts of meat than my misfortunate, working a$$ was buying.
