Can you recommend a good dog breed for me?

I'm looking into getting a puppy. I really like medium sized dogs, and would prefer a smaller dog over a large dog. I love dogs that have longer muzzles and pointed ears like Australian Cattle Dogs, Akitas, Huskies, or Shiba Inus, and I'm not a fan of dogs with flat faces like pugs. This isn't a necessity though, just a preference. It would be best if the dog was easy to manage and didn't require a lot of training. Also, I don't have a large yard and it's not fenced in, so the dog would have to be comfortable being indoors a lot of the time (though I would take it outside to play or go on walks). For the most part though, I'm fairly flexible. I plan on researching the breeds very well before choosing one, but I was wondering what you would recommend to give me something to start from. Thanks =)

Update:

@ Lor Gal - No no no, you completely misunderstood my question. I haven't chosen any breeds yet. I was saying I like dogs that look sort of like Australian Cattle Dogs, Akitas, Huskies, or Shiba Inus. I didn't say that's what I want. And just so you know, I've already had an Australian Cattle Dog and I handled her very well. It was at my old home and she had plenty of room to run around. I took her on walks and played with her often, and I'm aware that I can no longer accommodate that breed of dog.

Update 2:

@ DogLuver - I would love to adopt from a shelter, but I still would like to have some breeds in mind so I don't come home with a dog I can't care for.

First of all, I would just search online for things like "easiest dog breeds to train", "best dog breeds for small yard", etc. until you compile a list of dog breeds that match all of your wants. Although some breeds are more intelligent than others, all puppies are going to require training. And also keep in mind that just because a source says a breed typically acts a certain way, not all dogs follow breed standards. For example, most sources may say a dachshund is a very stubborn breed, but the two I have were surprisingly easy to train.

If you want an older puppy that is already in the process of being trained, or you want a fully trained dog, adopt from a shelter. You may find a dog at the shelter that is a perfect fit for you, but is a breed you've never even considered! So start at the shelter and then if that is unsuccessful, purchase a dog from a reputable breeder only!!

When it comes to breeders, you truly get what you pay for. Back to dachshunds as an example: One of mine cost a pretty penny, BUT it was from a reputable breeder, who had vet records, references, they showed the parents, they were comfortable with showing their home and how they raise dogs, etc. My other dachshund was several hundred less, the breeder did not give vet records, did not show parents, etc and I ended up having to pay several hundred dollars at the vet because we almost lost her to parasites!

Shelter's are "cheaper" dogs, but at shelter's all of the dogs are usually vet checked before sent to their new home!

    Good luck in your search!

O.K., just saying, MY australian cattle dog did fine in a big city without a fenced yard. She was happy and didn't get into trouble. Of course she could count on a pretty good walk every morning and every evening. She needed those walks and so did I. But, I get it if you can't commit to that much walking.

Used to have two standard dachshunds. The face is similar to what you are describing. Maybe that breed is smaller than you'd like, but you don't need to exercise them much and they aren't yappy. Dachshunds are a very brave dog with a much deeper bark than you would expect. I swear, people will think it's a big dog if they just hear it. My dogs were very good at finding family members or other pets out on my parent's ranch, which came in handy a few times. The first dog got lonely because my husband and I both worked and my daughter was at school all day. After we adopted a buddy for her, she was fine.

You will find dogs of every kind in a shelter..mutts, pointy-eared, purebreds, lots of variety. Please go to your local shelter and adopt a dog! You will be saving a life!

Also, thought I'd mention- stay AWAY from any "cockapoos" or "goldendoodles". Any dogs labeled as such are really just mutts (yes, MUTT is the correct term for a mixed-breed dog, not "cockapoo" etc.) bred by Backyard Breeders to make a quick buck. These breeders know basically nothing about their dogs, and take poor care of them. Often enough these mixed-breed scams come from puppy mills. Avoid any pet shops and newspaper ads because both are puppy mill/Backyard Breeder overflows. No good breeder creates mixed-breed dogs, they only breed dogs to improve a breed and produce working and showing-class examples. Designer dogs are bred ONLY by unreputable breeders.

Whew. Just thought I'd mention the truth here..sometimes it gets mixed up. :)

I strongly reccommend going to a nearby shelter. You could be saving a dogs life. I origonally wanted a purebred female black lab. I went to the shelter and came home with an absoulutely wonderful male beagle mix. He wasnt what I origonnally wanted but he stole my heart. If u really want a purebred I recommend a Schipperke. They are medium size dogs, with long muzzles and pointy ears. here is a link to a picture

    Good Luck =)

Okay...lets start with Australian cattle dogs. Extremely high energy dogs. Ask yourself how much time each day are you willing to donate to lots of exercise. As a matter of fact, all of these dogs that you have chosen are dogs that are going to need a substantial amount of exercise and training. And Akita's and Shiba Inu can have temperment issues. All these dogs you have chosen will need lots of exwercise and to be tired out each day, otherwise, your liable to have a bored dog on your hands. And high energy, bored dog will get into trouble and become destructive. So, if you don't want to spend lots of time on training, I would seriously recommend you rethink your list and start over. How about a Cocker Spaniel?

I definitely recommend a Cockapoo (cocker spaniel and poodle mix). My friend has one, and it is sweet and very manageable! It is not a very large breed, either.

The Cockapoo is loyal, intelligent, and very affectionate. This dog is fairly easy to train being mixed with what is said to be one of the smartest dogs in the world. Being that this dog is mixed with the Poodle, he makes a wonderful training student. Having a very sweet nature, this dog is sure to steal the hearts of many.
