I have a question regarding a STD.....can I have some proffesional advice please?
I hate asking this, but I really need some help. Please? So I've been with my fiance for 1 year and 9 months. I get a regular pap smear and have never had any issues or weird break outs, I'm on birth control so we haven't been using condoms as often as we should, well November came around and he broke out with a case of genital warts. We went down and I got checked out and came out clean for any STD's but sure enough he had genital warts. I asked the nurse (they don't have doctors at this facility) and she said that it could happen years after they contract the virus but it's highly unlikely. I want to know the truth, is this something that can pop up after years of having it, or how unlikely is it to just show up and how safe am I now? I'm stressing out and we haven't had sex since. We don't fight over it but I have that constant nagging suspicion in the back of my head that he might have cheated. I'm stuck between a rock and hard spot and I want to know some Professional opinions on this matter. Thank you for your time!

Well, I am not quite a professional yet (got another semester of grad school). Genital warts can be caused by a number of STDs. STDs like low-risk HPV and herpes can easily be in someone's system for years and no one would know. You will need to figure out (if you don't already know) what STD is causing the genitals warts as there are precautions you can take to prevent transmission to you. HPV has a vaccine, herpes has medication, less common STDs like molluscum contagiousum also has treatments. If it is HPV, 90% of HPV cases resolve themselves. It is even possible you got the HPV, never had any symptoms, and your body fought it off. But for herpes and HPV, while uncommon, it can take years for symptoms to appear if they appear at all. I recently wrote a paper on Herpes Simplex Virus 2 transmission to newborns during vaginal births and statistics said that most of the infants born with HSV-2 were born to mothers who had NEVER has symptoms and didn't even know they had herpes.
If he has indeed had it all along, you are at no more of risk than every other time you had sex. It is also very possible you never got. You should, however, be tested for herpes and HPV. HPV will not always show up on pap smears (so an HPV test will need to be done) and herpes does not show up on pap smears. You will need to determine what STD this is and how to treat it before I advise having sexual contact. Since genitals warts can pass through skin to skin contact, and not bodily fluids, wearing condoms reduces the risk, but you can still transmit the virus even while wearing a condom.
