How many crunches and sit-ups should I do to see results?

I'm trying to tone up my stomach.

How long should I do them for (how many each day or which times in the day)

Is it helpful and does it get you results or am I wasting my time?

If you want real results try the P90x Ab Ripper workout. If your core isn't very strong when you start this can be brutal, haha. But you see results very quickly. Do it 3 times per week, monday, wednesday, and friday, using the other days to allow the muscles to recover. If you do it everyday it will actually take longer to notice the results. Video below. :)

    Cheers,

It has been heavily debate in the fitness realm whether or not the crunch is completely useless, and oftentimes the answer is yes. Try doing planks instead, they are focusing on the abs, but tone everything else too, and work waaaay more. You see the results fast as well and feel a difference too. Cardio is also important in developing and revealing your abdominal muscles. Good luck!

hmmmm, it's not about how many you do a day, or how long you do a day, but more about being consistent, and losing body fat. you could do a ton of sit ups a day, but if there's a layer or body fat on top, it's going to be harder to see. I'd recommend an exercise that tones muscles like swimming or long distance running, along with ab work-outs. I'd say run 3 miles, and 100 sit-ups, or swim 1 mile and 100 sit-ups.

PS: a healthy diet also helps a ton while doing this.

    You're wasting your time.

Crunches only really work your lower back and upper abdominals. The real "middle" where your naval is hardly gets worked at all.

I suggest researching (Yahoo has a great search engine) "core routine". This should produce results with lots of videos demonstrating several different things you should be doing.

    Here's one I found.

crunches and sit ups are very ineffective as it takes 1000+ sit ups to burn 5 calories of fat. The best thing to do is Planks. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kiA9j-dR0oM
