I have a question for Democrats, non-evangelical Republicans and Independents.?

I am 55 years old, was raised in small, rural Methodist churches where my dad was a minister. I went to Sunday School, knew all the hymns by heart and was probably always considered real "straight laced" by my acquaintances. I was and still am a devout and sincere Christian. Then, about 30 years ago or more it seems like the world suddenly changed. Because I am a rather liberal Democrat in my political life I found myself shocked by conservative "Christian" rhetoric. In their view, it seemed, I had never really been a Christian at all. It seemed crystal clear that simply because I was a progressive Democrat many Christians no longer considered me a "fellow Christian." As a result I have become more tolerant toward people of different faiths and differences of all kinds. And I would like to think I am more open to differences of Christian practice and interpretation. But I also feel hurt and embittered in that it seems my feelings of "brotherhood" and fellowship with fellow Christians have been maliciously stolen from me.

I am curious if other people have any similar experiences or feelings. And please......I know it will be hard to resist.......but could all you outspoken right-wingers please resist the temptation to spout your venom and cruelty.......just this once?!?!?! I am seeking honest and sincere answers.

I was raised very Catholic, I'm 58, and I agree with every word you've posted.

As a boy all of the nuns were so proud of JFK, a Catholic, being elected president.

Now, at mass (I still attend), all I hear is political rhetoric for right to life, anti-homosexual rants, prayers for priests who have stumbled (molesters?) and other political/social reformation.

I have trouble resolving those messages with my own feelings about a True God who preached love and tolerance. Why/How can I forgive clergy for their sexuality-based problems, and yet condemn a gay couple who love each other living in peace?

Ann Landers used to write a lot of MYOB responses in her column, I wish the religious right had read them.

My path to my God should be my struggle, I need not waste time condemning others on their path.

i do not recognize the precentages and neither does every person else, because the study has no longer been finished. yet i'm fairly useful that the better up you go interior the Republican business enterprise, the extra secret atheists there are. Republicans, were playing to the fundamentalist Christians ever because that Karl Rove got here up with this mind-set. He requested himself, what vote casting block ought to proceed to vote for the celebration that instructed them stuff they had to take heed to with out ever turning in something for them. the most suitable in good structure Karl got here up with changed into fundamentalist Christians, because that they're educated their total existence to believe tall thoughts that in no way happen absolutely. for instance, what number elections have taken position because the Republicans followed the no abortions plank? Has something replaced in this regard? No. Nor in the different issue that they have got been promoting to the Christians, both. that they had an quite powerful run ever because that Nixon with this mind-set, till the fool son, Bush the more youthful, extremely a lot destroyed the Republican celebration for reliable and all, and doubtless the total u . s . a . with them. So the association between Republicans and fundamentalist Christians isn't something that sprang up, spontaneously, because the leaders of the celebration were religious Christians, yet as a effect of an quite wide unsleeping and cynical political mind-set to get elected. that is why i think a group of hypocritical atheists on the helm of this now sinking deliver. The Christians are only starting up to seize on, now that the wear and tear and tear has been finished with their electoral help. -- Regards, John Popelish

I was a Christian and I'm an independent, who leans a little more right. I'm sorry for the super right wings making you feel uncomfortable, but being tolerable of other religions is a good thing. We need everyone of all religions, and everyone with no religion, should be tolerable of everyones beliefs. It is actually a good thing, because you are now more open minded. Hope that response means something

I also am a Christian independent, I was a Republican when Reagan sold the Republican Party to those thieves in Christian clothing the "Christian Coalition". It is extremely telling that the professed leader of the "Christian Coalition" went to prison for fraud, conspiracy and theft but is now one of the leaders of the "Tea Party" movement. Tolerance is something I too have learned but which is seen as anathema to current Republicans and "Christian" Leaders. I think it had something to do with the rise of the "Media Churches", the TV and Radio Evangelists who steal millions in Christ's name. Yes Jim Baker I am talking about you!
