How do you keep a toddler away from the cat food?

I leave dry food out for my cats during the day. My baby thinks it's great fun to grab a handful (or two) of the kibble and start eating it. Is there a way to keep him away from the food, but still leave it out for the cats? My house has an open floor plan, so there's no easy way to keep the baby out of the kitchen, and I don't want to feed the cats on the kitchen counter. Any ideas?

the cat food won't hurt your child. leave a bowl for babe on the floor with human food -they love to imitate & remember, it's part of learning. keep the cat's bowl on a high counter to deter the child.

Why don't you put him in another room or outside when a meal is being eaten? This is the only solution as he is only doing what comes naturally to an animal who enjoys his food. My cat is sneaky like this as well, she will even crouch down low and move very slowly thinking I wont notice, lol. I have 3 cats and we just eat in a seperate room. I have learnt the hard way many times, the latest was when I made a beautiful lamb curry and left it on the stove while I left the room.. A minute later the cat was up there happily eating the meal I'd spent forever cooking. It's just part & parcel when you own a cat :)

We have our cat food up in the laundry room. While the cat could easily jump up there, we also have a piece of wood that serves as a ramp.

Find somewhere else in the house that the food can be out where your baby can't reach it but the cats can get it.

This is a tough one, some kids just have a passion for cat food. Cal you put the food behind something he can't get to or close off a room with a baby gate? Trust me he will get over the cat food thing soon enough.

I would either put the cat bowl somewhere your son can't get it or start feeding the cats once or twice a day so their isn't any food in the bowl most of the day.

I have a couple of Superyard XT gates that separate our twin toddlers from the computer and TV. The cat can jump over them from nearby chairs.

Where do you keep the litter box? That has to be blocked off from toddlers. Can you use the same system for the food?
