Depth of field question?

I inderstand all the basic principals of photography, but i was wondering this:

If I am shooting a still life from a tripod, and manually focus on the front of the object. Then change my aperture from F4 to F8; does the now wider depth of field appear to the camera side of the focus point, or is it applied behind the focus point, or is the focus point in the centre of the focus range?

I hope that makes sense, and ignore the exposure change that will obviously be required.

Thanks

There are only 3 factors that affect your depth of field (DOF):

    1) The focal length of the lens.

    2) The aperture.

    3) The subject distance.

At this site - http://www.dofmaster.com/dofjs.html - you can use the DOF Calculator to compute your DOF for any combination of the 3 factors imaginable. Choose your make and model of camera from the list provided so your results will be accurate. Any "crop factor" is taken into account by the Calculator.

This site is interactive and allows you to see the effect on your DOF as you change 1 or more of the 3 factors. http://www.kamerasimulator.se/eng/?page_id=2
