What to do if a puppy is deaf?

My cousin has come into possession of a bit bull mix puppy. She's white with light blue eyes, but doesn't react to sound. I've even picked her up and whistled near the back of her head, and she didn't even turn around. My cousin is planning to take her to a vet for testing. If she's totally deaf, he's thinking of buying a "shock collar" for training her. Any comments?

She is most likely profoundly deaf.

A vibration collar or "shock collar" is the greatest thing you can ever do for a deaf dog, because it gives the dog's owner the same control and safety off the leash as a hearing dog.

Please disregard the idiots who seem to associate vibrating collars with punishment. They are communication devices, pure and simple.

People like Charlotte and Bailey would probably curse me out because I bought my deaf daughter a cellphone, which she of course uses on the vibrating alert setting.

It's pretty common in dogs with a lot of white - dogs need pigment around their ears and eyes in order for those organs to develop properly. Taking her to get officially tested is a good idea - I'd also recommend getting her eyes tested as well, as deaf low-pigment dogs often have vision problems too.

Tell him NO to the shock collar! Besides the deafness, she's no different than other puppy, and slapping a shock collar on is only going to confuse and hurt her. There are many other methods of training deaf dogs; tell him to look into vibration collars and training hand signals.

Hey. I had a dog that lived to be 15 or 16. She was blind, deaf, and had a back problem.

She was still happy when we petted her. I would just love the puppy and watch over her... I dont like shock collars. My friend's dad got one for their dog so... my friend and her mom hid it. Ya...

What i would do is teach the dog tricks by hand motions and putting her into the position that the trick was asking. For example, my new dog knows "high five" so sometimes when i put my hand up, she gives me a high five without me saying it. Then i would bell train the dog for when she needs to.. Go. Haha. (put a string of bells on the door and have her hit it when she wants to go outside)

    Hope it helps somehow :)

Training a deaf dog will require a lot of patience and hand signals.

I see nothing wrong with using a shock or vibrating collar, since the dog will not respond to voice commands. That's the best way to get the dogs attention.

That is abuse!! Train her by voice commands, or vibrations, like tapping the floor, so she knows where you are. If you plan on using abusive means to train her, take her back where you got her and let someone kind and patient take her home to love. If you are young, you shouldn't have this type of pup. You would not be the right person for her. An older person is best for a deaf dog.

I have been given a entire refund and that i stored my dogs. guidance him replaced into no longer consumer-friendly. yet i could touch him as quickly as I talked to him so he could desire to sense the sound of my voice. I used treats to get him to come back. you may desire to place a leach on him and carry a handle on your hand, and while he's taking it, you may basically provide him a variety of of lovin, and compliment him alongside with your palms on him, so he's familiar with your talking to him. i does no longer anticipate to a variety of of the dogs, yet i'm beneficial you will locate out a thank you to coach him different issues, i think of utilising treats as a result's a sturdy theory.

Noooo! How would u like to be shoked repeatedly? First u make eye contact with her and u clap. They can usually pick up shock waves. Do hand motions and she should pick up on them
