It must have something to do with the fact that opposites attract. Bad people see good people as pushovers or just plain stupid. Some, have no integrity, no morals and are without a conscience. I had my eyes opened, when I was younger, tended to "see in others what I had in myself." I was sincere, honest, responsible. I thought others were basically, the same. They aren't. Too many are out for themselves, zero in on the innocents, and with no conscience, no guilt, will do anything ti anyone. It's as old as, good against evil. When honest, concerned citizens march for less government, wanting to return to the basics, our original Constitution, they are vilified, lied about and called twisted names (the tea party). Without any values to return to, how can there be any common ground, anything of worth? Everyone goes off, in different directions, with no thought of the bigger picture or our common good.
Corruption has worsened and is harder to fight, flourishing with the Media, growing more powerful and insidious. Politicians have too much say, government is massive, creating monsters who are insatiable. "Those with power, corrupt, those with absolute power, corrupt absolutely." Just look at priorities today! It used to be as you mention-infinite possibilities with Space and Science. They have no dreams, no aspirations..they are not representing anyone but themselves, getting what they can, filling their pockets, catering to Lobbyists...making promises, raising funds, to get re-elected. It couldn't be much worse....each party is guilty. Listen to how easy it is for our President to blame everyone else, for everything else..Some great example he is setting!!! pointing, and putting blame, and not looking in the mirror.
It is much harder to keep people involved. Media distorts the truth, gives one sided information, few facts. You see people stick an Ipod in their ear, tune out, want entertainment, drugs, booze, sexual stimulation, knowing more about vapid celebrities, than what laws are passed. Now, unprecedented, unconstitutional activities are taking place, Czars appointed, Guns freely passed over the boarder, useless government agencies, being put in place, making more government union paper pushing, overpaid, employees, guaranteed outrageous pensions, and 16 trillion dollars in debt. This is all coated in layers of lies, and blame.
Most people are ignorant of everything going on. It will affect them, soon enough....but it will be too late.
The cure is for everyone to be responsible: for words, promises, actions, family, work, children, debts and homes, country. It is the only way to improve our world. Each and everyone of us has to set the best example we can. Keep your dreams and ideals and find more like minded people, who can be supportive of each other. Keep yourself positive and don't allow yourself to be dragged down to the lowest level. Be informed...find out what is going and vote...don't take the word of anyone else, find out for yourself..make a difference, raise the energy of the world, one person at a time.
The face in the mirror is the only one we can change, no one else. Lawyers are involved in everything, bringing everything down to the same old thing: money, law suits, blaming, accusations.... settlements.
I am afraid it might take some cataclysmic occurrence to clean things up...but with determination, and lofty goals and integrity, we could, possibly, turn things around.

Because the media loves competition and people love the media. If there were no media, then we could be fine.
