Not counting anything related to religion, what was the last charitable act you accomplished?
Prayer for friends and family doesn't count, nor does tithing. Have you done anything on your own (not related to any religion and away from those buildings) that helped your community in some direct way? Volunteering? Becoming a school aide? Caring for children in a co-op daycare? Visiting the elderly in nursing homes? Anything?
Why did you do it or why not?

The $1 store has umbrella's. I keep 1/2 a dozen in my car.
When I see someone standing in the rain waiting for the bus without one. I give them one.
I'm not sure if it counts as charity though,
It makes me feel good. Maybe I'm doing it out of selfishness.

I gave a man selling newspapers on Christmas morning $20 and told him to keep the paper. I paid for a cat to be boarded for two weeks to save it from being euthanized by her owner while I found it a home...in another city...and then drove 4 hours to take her there. I visit sick children at St. Jude and make them laugh with the fun camera pics on my iPad. I volunteer for and donate to numerous animal resue groups. I just signed up to volunteer for a group called NODA (No One Dies Alone) to be with elderly people when they have no family when it is their time to go (I haven't been called yet but have gone through training). I visit with elderly people in a nursing home on a regular basis and I bring pets to visit with them also. I make monthly monetary donations to numerous charitable organizations. I also donate goods and food to several local charities on a regular basis. I am an atheist.
Last thing was the $20 to the newspaper man. Why? He was an older gentleman, working on a very cold Christmas morning while everyone else was opening gifts. Obviously only people who really need money would do that. Not to pat myself on the back, but I do this every year. I give money to people who I see working on Christmas whether it is at a gas station, convenience store or fast food place as a "thank you". I do it because I know what it is like to work holidays and I know how hard it is. Some say it isn't "charity" work, I say it is because only those in need would be willing to work on a major holiday.

I picked up a friend who was broken down on the highway in the middle of the night about 20 miles from my house on Thursday night. and I sent a donation to a local animal shelter this weekend.
Up until about a year ago, I used to volunteer at the shelter a couple days a week, but then I got promoted and my work schedule doesn't really leave me the time to do so, so I turned to donating money. They get an anonymous check every month.

I'm not really a part of any religion, so anything I do isn't really related to any religious requirements. but because churches serve a specific community, they are in touch with people who can use help. so they are a good place to go if you're looking to help someone. you don't have to be a member, they're not going to turn you away. the first boss i ever had hired several people she met through her parish priest because they needed jobs. she really helped them turn things around, though i don't know if that sort of thing fits with the way you worded your question.
I recently gave up some personal space and a room in my house to a couple guys who were down on their luck and couldn't afford their rent anymore. they'll be paying me some rent for sure, but at a rate they can afford and at a time they can afford it.
as soon as I finish going through all the stuff we had to move around (clothes, furniture, etc.) to accommodate them, I'll be donating all the usable stuff. my wife and I donate clothes every now and then...whatever is still good, but we don't use much anymore.
I also help out at my wife's school. she's a teacher for a public school, and I help out with some school functions from time to time. when christmas comes around, all the teachers pull together to get presents for the less fortunate kids. this year, I helped wrap and organize the presents into piles for each family. that may be related to religion in a way, but I didn't do it for a religion. it's for the kids who were going to wake up christmas morning without any presents under their tree. I spent about $50, which isn't much, but I don't have a lot of money myself at the moment.
I do it because I can, I don't like good things to go to waste, and it is usually convenient for us in some way. could I do more? probably, but it's something

I'm volunteering with scouting (non-religious) and I'm running a pub with a few other people set up as a foundation so therefore I recieve nothing at all either, it's a pub with alternative music giving the youth in the area a place to get to and listen something else then just the mainstream crap.

I worked at a Saalvation Army store.
Even though it's target demographic is the poor, you'd have no idea how many people roll up in BMWs or better.
Though it was pretty damn funny when a family dropped off a dead grandmothers things, and in the boxes and drawers we found ancient sexy sleepwar and even a vibrator that was about 15" long lol.
Source(s): Oh and that was volunteer work. Only thing we got in return was a meat pie and unlimited water for lunch. - Anonymous9 years ago
I am sitting here before clocking in at work where I help people with severe cognitive and physical disabilities enjoy a high quality of life. I could be making more elsewhere but because I enjoy the nature of the work I am here in this stressful, relatively low paying, and mostly thankless job.

I spend a lot of time on here trying to educate people how harmful and destructive religion is, and how religion could put the world in another Dark Ages.
I'd like to see my grandchildren and great grandchildren survive.
We are using up all our resources on the planet and polluting the whole planet at the same time because of overpopulation caused by religion- anti-abortion, anti-gay, right-to-life, be fruitful and multiply, etc, etc, etc...
We are on a disastrous head-on collision course with nature because of overpopulation caused by religion!

Well, not in any organized fashion I give donations to people on the street... even buy them food when they say they're hungry when I'm able. I used to give regularly to the ASPCA because I love animals but haven't recently. I do plan on picking that back up though.
@JL: Hey!! I LOVE that.
