They are very much real! Let me tell you about my encounter with a dragon many years past:
I was but a lad, doing odd jobs for the elderly. Mrs. Jones, an octogenarian of considerable stature, insisted that her home was far too dusty and sent me to town to fetch a feather duster. On the road to Blanstonbury, I happened upon a queer-looking rock in the middle of the path. While I was examining it, a shadow was cast upon me; something quite large had passed between the noonday sun and myself. I looked up and saw it--a fierce, emerald-eyed beast! His gaze pierced my very soul, and before I knew what had happened, my young legs had carried me all the way home! Too bad for me, he was waiting for me at my house. He spoke an arcane language that I can't type but he pretty much said that he ate my poor mother and the widow Mrs. Jones next door, and that unless I kept quiet about dragons' existence in the world, he'd eat me too! I ran across the street to Jerry's house and told him about the dragon and then, true to his word, the dragon ate me. Life inside a dragon is kind of a drag (ha ha ha) but he has free WiFi so I'm not gonna complain.

Considering Pre Historic animals and the fact we really do not know exactly what existed during that period of time. The Dragon has similarities to the Alligator or crocodile on the under side and the leg structure. The Wing structure was similar to the Flying bird. Their diet would give them enormous gases in the stomach and belching would thrust flames out. Were they real, probably so, but didn't survive for very long. It would be highly unlikely that we would ever discover their bones or fossils.

Dragons are some of the oldest of mythological creatures, they appear in the cultures of almost all ancient societies. In the earliest times, they were shown with the Great Mother or the water god or the warrior sun god. They had the power to be either bad or good and were considered to be the most powerful creatures in the world.
Tales from many cultures, have created these great beasts giving them many different attributes. The images that we see from history, are made up of different parts of many animals. Most seem to have a lot of alligator and snakelike characteristics. Most have a lion's head plus maybe lion's front legs and eagle's feet. Some have wings and can breath fire.
Chinese Dragons occupy a very important position in Chinese mythology. These Ancient China Creatures show up in arts, literature, poetry, architecture, and many other aspects of the Chinese conscience.

They do not exist today but it makes one wonder why so many cultures that had no contact with one another, such as Native Americans and Japanese, have similar traditions with dragons. Same as Mayans, Ancient Egypt and British. Could they have at some point in history?

Mostly myth. However, there are some cryptozoologists and young earth creationists that claim that dinosaurs walked with men. If that was the case, these huge lizards could have been described as dragons.

They are strictly a myth, but extremely popular. Even the Romans believed in them (see the link below).
