Does death by salt seem like a just punishment for looking backward?

I hear about all these atrocities occurring in countries overseas. It seems like it gets pretty crazy over there sometimes.

Update:

Many people said yes to this. very good.

I'm confused. You read this story literally? It's a poetic story with great imagery. Books like that in modern days, win prizes.

Several people gave good explanations about how she was looking back and longing for a debase, immoral way of life even after given an opportunity to run forward. Here's a fun addition. Salt was considered a sustenance of life at the time, so much so that in Hebrew the word for king is almost the same as for salt, & was a dominating trade item (i.e. financially a form of money in early trade days). It's about being drowned in materialism. Frozen in time by it, not able to see past it or exist outside of it....drowned in mounds of it's excessiveness.

Your literalness is an incredibly simplistic reading. You're assuming your talking to simple people, then asking us to justify YOUR style of reading it that you made up just for us. (Cause I doubt you are that simplistic a reader in general.) Most people do NOT read the bible literally. For Jews that includes ultra-religious almost all do NOT read it literally.

The "looking backwards" had to do with a heart's desire that she longed for in that corrupted city. It was so unfortunate that she couldn't appreciate her Creator and all that was given her. BUT, look at how the world is today. Just like you mentioned "atrocities"...and you don't have to go to foreign countries to see how "deep" the corruption really is!!! Read 2 Tim. 3:1-5 and the newspaper :)

Um, the looking back of Lot's wife had to do with her longing for the material things and comforts that she was leaving behind in the ungodly city she was fleeing from. She was given divine warning from God's holy angels themselves not to look back, she chose to disobey and ended up as a pillar of salt.

In case no one has told you yet, the United States of America and Britain are the Seventh head of the wild beast of Revelation 13:1, 2 that came out of the "sea" (mankind which is alienated from God / see Isaiah 57:20). The United States and Britain act as a dual world power (like Medo-Persia) in these last days of the present global ungodly system of things.

Better check yourself if whether or not YOU are marked with the symbolic number of the wild beast of Revelation 13:1, 2.

To understand exactly WHAT the mark of the beast is and whether or not you have it, read, research and investigate the information in the link below along with ANY copy of the Bible.

The depth of the punishment is telling, it reminds me of "The Dead Sea" which nothing can live in.

"In Hebrew, the Dead Sea is Yām ha-Melaḥ "sea of salt" (Genesis 14:3). In prose sometimes the term Yām ha-Māvet (ים המוות, "sea of death") is used, due to the scarcity of aquatic life there.[6] In Arabic the Dead Sea is called About this sound al-Bahr al-Mayyit (help·info)[3] ("the Dead Sea"), or less commonly baḥrᵘ lūṭᵃ (بحر لوط, "the Sea of Lot"). Another historic name in Arabic was the "Sea of Zoʼar", after a nearby town in biblical times. The Greeks called it Lake Asphaltites (Attic Greek ἡ Θάλαττα ἀσφαλτῖτης, hē Thálatta asphaltĩtēs, "the Asphaltite[7] sea"). The Bible also refers to it as Yām ha-Mizraḥî (ים המזרחי, "the Eastern sea") and Yām ha-‘Ărāvâ (ים הערבה, "Sea of the Arabah").

The Dead Sea (Arabic: البحر الميت‎ About this sound al-Baḥr al-Mayyit (help·info),[3] Hebrew: יָם הַ‏‏מֶּ‏‏לַ‏ח‎‎, Yām HamMélaḥ, "Sea of Salt", also Hebrew: יָם הַ‏‏מָּוֶת‎‎, Yām HamMā́weṯ, "The Sea of Death"), also called the Salt Sea, is a salt lake bordering Jordan to the east and Israel and the West Bank to the west. Its surface and shores are 423 metres (1,388 ft) below sea level,[2] Earth's lowest elevation on land. The Dead Sea is 377 m (1,237 ft) deep, the deepest hypersaline lake in the world. With 33.7% salinity, it is also one of the world's saltiest bodies of water, though Lake Assal (Djibouti), Garabogazköl and some hypersaline lakes of the McMurdo Dry Valleys in Antarctica (such as Don Juan Pond) have reported higher salinities. It is 8.6 times saltier than the ocean.[4] This salinity makes for a harsh environment in which animals cannot flourish, hence its name. The Dead Sea is 67 kilometres (42 mi) long and 18 kilometres (11 mi) wide at its widest point. It lies in the Jordan Rift Valley, and its main tributary is the Jordan River.

A young woman in Saudi Arabia. Stoned and dis-communicated for the crime of being a rape victim. Without modern concepts of social values and justice, literal punishments can get pretty nasty.

Are you speaking of Lot's wife? God had warned Lot, who told his family, not to look back and die. Lot's wife did not want to leave her house and other material things. Instead of obedience to God, she chose to long for what she left behind in that doomed city. So, she died.

Many times obedience to god does not take grand gestures. At times it is just a very simple thing. Even Satan's temptation of Jesus involved only a simple act of worship. A bow perhaps? Likewise obedience to Jehovah God is at times involves only a simple "No" to a normally accepted practice, not a glorious sacrifice.

Disobedience to God always brings death - so yes of course

Rom 6:23 For the wages of sin [is] death; but the gift of God [is] eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

She was warned. She chose to disobey. You have the same choice.

P.S. America is the most violent country in the world. Check the statistics.

You mean turning into a pillar of salt after an angel specifically warned you. DO NOT LOOK BACK. and you do it anyway? Yes.

If someone has more knowledge of danger and safety than you, I think its best to listen to them..

Like don't stare at the sun otherwise it may blind you..

Same applies when God said "don't turn or look back"..
