Which do you prefer: religious zealots who want theocracy or atheists who want to abolish religion?
I'm assuming someone took offense to "scarier", so I removed it.
The question doesn't infer that all atheists want to abolish religion. It speaks specifically of those who do.
I see some decent, well thought out answers, but am most fascinated by the fact that nearly half of those answering refuse to choose.

As an atheist I don't want to abolish religion, but I would like to see people give it up voluntarily. I also want to ensure that it is not used by the state to discriminate against me in the slightest. I fear the religious zealots want to establish a theocracy where I am at best a second class citizen, and at worse condemned for my lack of belief. I also think that the surest way to see religion self destruct would be if the zealots won that battle. Thus I prefer the theocracy. Their failure would speak volumes to the inanity of Christianity.

This took some thought, but I think I would prefer the zealots. I mean I feel like if we had religion completely abolished we might fall back into the dark ages. Personally I don't see most people really doing anything good unless they are raised to believe that they will be rewarded for their kindness. Human nature is to take what you want and destroy anything in your way. Example A: war which could only be toned down by religion.

There may be a few bad apples in every bushel, but most atheists take a laissez faire approach to religion. Believe whatever you want as long as that doesnt interfere with others ability to do the same. Unfortunately religions, on the whole, dont take this viewpoint.
To answer your question directly... neither. Asking would you rather have a secular or a theocratic autocracy is like asking to decide which poison you would prefer drinking. Both are horrible and must be avoided.

the scarier is definitely the idea of every country having a theocracy. with every country being ruled by religion, earth would probably not even make it a decade without everyone bombing everyone until everyone is dead or the planet is uninhabitable and the only people left alive are deformed and mutilated.
(copied and pasted from the last question since it got removed and i never got a chance to actually post it thanks to some whiny ****)

the atheists wanting to abolish religion would be the better choice. i don't want anyone telling me how to live, and not all Atheists are particularly zealous about their "works".
those religious nuts are SCARY, to be sure!

I believe in God, but i am afraid i have to pick curtain no. 2, for the simple reason that organized religion is far to oppressive and damaging to the concept of free will, personal liberty and freedom!

The latter. Religion should be abolished, not by repression however, but by education.

Also, I love the fact that this question pisses people off.

I personally don't want it abolished, I just want it out of the public and into your own private lives. Out of politics and schools.
