A question about employee being fired?

Is it legal or ok for employer to fire employee without any reason and/or notice (in advance)? Is it alright for employer to fire employee who has done nothing wrong, without any reason? Should employer tell employee why he/she (employee) got fired?

This just happened to one of my friends, who came home, disappointed and confused, because employer did not tell her why she got fired.

Like this:

Boss: Sally, you've been doing great jobs and I'm pleased with your performance. Unfortunately, you're fired. Pack your stuffs and get out.

Sally: "What? Why?"

Boss: I'm not liable to tell you why you're fired. Just pack your stuffs and get out.

Last question, employer and employee signed the contact that stated that employee can NOT be fired for any reason, can employer break the contract and fire employee?

I want to know.

Update:

Oh yeah. What about employees in military base? Does state laws apply to military base or military base has its own laws?

As other people answered, most states have "employment at will," and anybody can be terminated for no reason at all, at any time.

Military bases don't necessarily have different laws, but actual military jobs do.

Also, no employer would ever sign a contract that says that they cannot fire an employee for any reason.

Most states are an at will state. Unless she proves the firing to be discrimatory then the boss has every right to fire her. However since they have a contract she can sue. I bet the contract states that both of them must give notice of firing and quitting.
