Is Moby Dick overrated?

I recently read Moby Dick and I was bored to tears. I read War and Peace and loved it. But Moby Dick has a narrator who disappears afters about 100 pages. Is this supposed to be good writing? Any answers will be appreciated.

i really enjoyed the book, although i did not feel all of the unending information about whales & whaling was all necessary.

I suppose it's a matter of taste. Many people, including me, enjoy all the digressions. Of course they're not "necessary," but then, other than bread and water, what is?

If you prefer the bread-and-water Hemingway style (in which an entire novel goes: "There was a war. I lost body parts. Somebody died. The end."), fine. I'll take Melville and Joyce, thank you very much.
